VP, Field Engineering

About the Role: 

The VP of Field Engineering will manage several teams (Solution Architects, Data Ops, SWAT/Sustaining Engineering) to drive the successful platform implementation of our clients. The focus of these teams includes: 

• Solutioning 
• Partnering with our implementors 
• Ensuring the 24/7/365 operations of our platform and ongoing support 
• Sustaining engineering to ensure our platform's continued resiliency and performance 

You will be the face to our customers for all aspects of standing up, implementing, and continuing excellence in operating and improving our platform. You will also partner with the CTO and Product Engineering in refining our roadmap and architectural design considerations and driving innovation, ultimately helping to ensure our success in the marketplace and, most notably, with our customers. At Abacus, we are custodians of data for our clients; This requires efficient processes to manage data implementations, production, quality, and security. 

 As VP of Field Engineering, you will: 

• Design and implement an efficient Data Ops organization, leveraging onshore and offshore resources, focused on 24/7/365-day operations and meeting SLAs over 98% of the time. Driving innovation around automation to ensure operational excellence and predictability and partnering with our Data Governance/Telemetry teams to ensure issues with data are discovered and addressed as soon as possible. 
• Manage the Tier 1 and 2 engineering support teams to address bugs and issues with the platform. Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve platform problems and partner with engineering for tier 3 issues. Keeping internal and external teams apprised and managing RCAs to improve the process and technology continually.
• Manage the sustaining engineering organization to continually improve the platform to maintain operational excellence and evolve to meet ever-changing business needs while aligning to our roadmap in partnership with CTO and Product Engineering.
• Establish and mature our FinOps for cloud cost management. Design, Develop, and implement our cloud cost containment and reporting strategy. Enable your team to set up alerts on our cloud platform costs and align with our client forecasts. Respond to overruns and address issues to mitigate cost overruns in the future. 
• Work with DevOps on strategies to manage and drive down costs, continue to innovate, and increase our ROI and competitive advantage on being best of breed on cloud cost containment and management.
• Lead teams, both onshore and offshore, towards all these initiatives.
• Identify, document, and refine standard processes.
• Ensure the resiliency of our platform towards three to four nines uptime. 

 What we're looking for: 

• A broad technical understanding of data cloud platforms, understanding the ecosystem and data lifecycle of data ingestion, transformation, MDM, FHIR interoperability, data decoration, and distribution. Data could be further enriched through reference data and calculated (both statistical and predictive measures through AI/ML) via Data and ML Ops. Therefore, understanding this and more, and how data observability, lineage, and auditability will be managed in such complex data cloud systems, sometimes across various data cloud platforms.  
• An active senior member and contributor to our Architecture and Data Guilds, introducing innovations and ideas to evolve and mature our technology and data practices to meet near-term and long-term objectives. Be the leader that takes some of these ideas to realization. Help drive the culture of innovation through Hackathons, etc.
• An ambassador, architecture guru, and evangelist for our platform, how it works, and how it's evolving to effectively lead a team of solution architects designing our platform for new and upcoming customer implementations.
• A commitment to excellence, delivering high-quality software in fast-paced development environments through resilience and a gritty attitude.
• A proven ability to successfully execute against a strategic vision in cooperation with CTO and other internal leaders, including Product Management, Sales, Marketing, Client Success, and Finance.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain technology-related topics to a non-technical audience.
• The ability to multitask and prioritize projects to meet scheduled deadlines.
• A solid track record of serving as a thought leader by employing superior communication skills, strong leadership qualities, and a team-oriented approach.

Qualifications: 

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field such as Health Science, Computer Science, Business, or equivalent experience. 
• Demonstrated history of successfully managing and scaling a development organization in high-growth, PE/VC-backed healthcare technology companies. 
• 7+ years of team management experience, overseeing Engineers, DevOps, and QA teams.
• 5+ years of experience working on data platforms that operate in the cloud. 
• Deep knowledge of various IaaS stacks on AWS, Azure, and GCP. As well as data platforms like Databricks and Snowflake.
• 5+ years’ experience with data processing frameworks, like Spark, dbt, etc.
• 5+ years’ of previous experience in software development.
• 3+ years’ experience with cloud setup, configuration, and cost containment strategies.
• Familiarity with IaC, Terraform, and cost containment practices and tooling (open source and otherwise).
