What you will be doing in the role of the VP of IT
The VP, Information Technology will be responsible for the planning, development, implementation, maintenance, security and administration of technology throughout Susan G. Komen (Komen). The VP, IT will work closely with the Komen team to assess user needs and to ensure efficient technology platforms, systems and software are available to accomplish our goals. This position will report to the Chief Financial and Operations Officer. Areas of responsibility include the full range of information systems and services which incorporates the technology, people and processes involved with business systems; as well as information technology encompassing the computers, storage, networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of information or data. All while ensuring the development and implementation of efficient technology operations and cost-effective systems to meet current and future needs of Komen.
The VP, IT is an experienced technology executive comfortable in managing highly technical teams while focusing on the strategic impact and mission of our organization. This candidate must be a passionate advocate for how technology can advance our organization's mission and support fundraising and operational goals, have the communication skills to build support for that vision, and have a proven track record of leading teams to deliver results. The candidate will also be responsible for developing, administering, monitoring, and coordinating the enterprise technology budget.
What you will bring to the table
- Partner with the Mission leadership team to define, strategize and execute the technology, architecture, and security vision for Komen's Mission programs to improve patient outcomes. The primary focus will be on:
- Innovating, enhancing, and maintaining Komen Health Cloud - a SaaS Health Technology Product suite - to be a world-class digital health and direct-to-patient services platform that supports patients throughout their journey by providing a connected and personalized experience.
- Providing technology and both business system and data architectural leadership, vision and direction to successfully launch and maintain Komen's people-powered, data-driven breast cancer research registry, Share for Cures.
- Lead and manage the resources (people, budget, technology) required to develop and deliver IT initiatives including myKomen Health, Share for Cures, technology systems, infrastructure, architecture, and other data / evaluation solutions across the organization.
- Lead and manage Komen's Product management group in defining and driving the suite of business systems, data architectures and technology solutions across the full life cycle of vision, planning, and execution. The product suite covers all initiatives and programs across Mission, Fundraising & Operations. This group's key responsibilities are to:
- Develop, define, and oversee the business systems and data architecture roadmap and manage it as required for meeting deliverables and revenue goals for the business.
- Lead the innovation of new product lines with a focus on best-in-class user experience (UX) design.
- Conduct business and systems process analysis, at a complex level, resulting in data, process, and software documentation and improvement recommendations. Analyze end-user needs and feedback.
- Work with cross-functional teams to develop processes, design, build and test features and products.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders and product teams to rank business requirements, and plan release rollouts.
- Lead and manage all initiatives for the Information Technology, Systems and Services group. This group's key responsibilities are to:
- Cultivate strong and effective relationships with stakeholders through proactive communication and being an active partner for improving business systems and services.
- Research, recommend, and implement improvements to maximize Komen's technological capacities to achieve both fundraising and operational efficiencies and effectiveness.
- Design, develop and implement Komen's information systems, web properties, software applications, various channels of Komen's support, and infrastructure systems.
- Define and implement a consistent change management process for IT-related system changes Working closely with Learning & Development to ensure appropriate training and resources are deployed across the organization for new hires and existing team members to work efficiently and effectively.
- Deploy and maintain a technology strategy for an evolving workplace that supports staff in a remote working environment.
- Develop the organizational architecture and define a standardized set of technologies for applications, processes, and devices, including cloud migration.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a robust information security strategy and program.
- Ensure all security standards are regularly reviewed, audited, and vetted with the appropriate organization leaders.
- Ensure compliance with data privacy standards for organization-wide data, proprietary information, and related intellectual property through information security and access management.
- Lead, manage, and develop an efficient and highly competent technology and product teams that serves as valuable business partners to the management and colleagues throughout Komen.
- Create a highly effective and user-friendly digital workplace with a standard set of platforms, tools, and devices for collaboration and employee productivity to best support a fully remote workforce.
- Oversee systems development and implementation across Komen, ensuring platforms, systems and software meet all user's needs. Ensures the integrity and reliability of computerized information systems, communication systems and office systems.
- Define Komen's technology vision and implement technology strategies that advance Komen's Mission, Fundraising & Operational goals aligning technology resources to achieve the short and long-term goals of the organization. Oversee the development of an enterprise data strategy including data lake implementation, enterprise data management, governance, reporting automation/simplification, data science, and next-generation cognitive / analytics technologies.
- Design and lead the implementation of Komen's strategy for technology while ensuring the implementation and enforcement of technology standards across the organization.
- Structuring technology policies, procedures, and standards to ensure organizational success.
- Cultivate strong and effective relationships with stakeholders through proactive communication and being an active partner for improving business systems and services.
- Maintain knowledge of current and emerging trends in the industry, including all relevant areas of information systems that might be incorporated as new technologies into future systems.
- Ensures the Technology and Product groups embody the Komen vision, mission, values and behaviors, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Foster a culture of inclusion and communication to build a sense of belonging with all team members.
- Ensure a high-performing Technology & Product organization that aligns with other Komen departments.
- Work collaboratively across the organization to ensure systems are optimized and maintained with the latest updates to provide end users the data integrity, data security, and ease of use.
- Create and maintain good working relationships with other peer organizations within and outside the philanthropic sector.
We already know you will also have
- Successful track record as a VP Information Technology, Engineering or in another similar leadership role running a fast-paced technology organization in a SaaS or hosted systems model.
Experience:
- 15+ years of experience in leading strategy and technology, building cross-functional teams in advanced technology development and Product management.
- 15+ years or more of progressive IT experience (including experience in a multi-office environment) with at least 10+ years of management experience are also required.
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, networking, distributed systems architecture, infrastructure, HW platforms, OS, virtualization, databases, web, and application servers.
Education:
- A bachelor's degree in computer science/information technology from an accredited college or university is preferred.
Qualifications:
- Proven ability to think strategically, effectively communicate and share that strategy to all the stakeholders.
- Experienced and comfortable partnering & advising at all levels of the organization.
- Track record of building / transforming IT, developing a digital strategy and creating an IT vision and roadmap. Demonstrated ability to drive strategic concepts to execution.
- Ability to facilitate a team to consensus on the scope, design decisions, and implementation decisions.
- Ability to explain technical concepts and theories to non-technical audiences, including to team members, leadership, scientists, and researchers. Demonstrated business-partner mentality with a track record of building strong, trusting, and collaborative relationships. Ability to maintain a calm and competent demeanor amid changing demands and priorities.
- Strong working knowledge of Product Management concepts, software development cycles, and associated tools platforms.
- Experience defining and supporting an evolving remote and geographically dispersed work environment.
- A track record of providing digital workplace tools and solutions to enhance staff productivity, ease of work and enabling business success.
- Very strong communication skills and a track record of building a culture of transparency and business partnership.
- A track record of building strong relationships across the organization and with our vendor partners.
- A commitment to cybersecurity and experience developing and leading a robust cyber program.
- Strong experience in cloud migration and building & scaling cloud native.
- Understanding of the agile development process.
- Familiarity with requirements techniques such as user stories, use cases, and informal modeling.
- Able to quickly analyze issues and determine the best course of action using available resources.
- A high degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.
- Strong negotiation skills and ability to prioritize.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced, complex, goal-oriented, team environment.
- The ability to meet deadlines, research technology issues, and products, and take initiative in the development and completion of projects.
- The ability to understand and articulate Komen's mission and work to many audiences.

- Experience working with a non-profit, healthcare, or related organization.
- The management of multiple concurrent projects while supporting a decentralized network of users. Experience in Salesforce, Blackbaud, Peoplesoft, Azure Cloud, ADP, JIRA, and Asana, is preferred.
- Experience managing large data sets and managing data at scale.
- Experience building cloud-native solutions and migrating applications to the cloud.
