We are looking for an experienced general manager with deep growth marketing expertise to run our newsletter operations. As we accelerate the digital growth of a seasoned magazine brand and diversify our revenue streams, building a robust newsletter and registration strategy is critical to our success. Newsletters drive sponsorship revenue, first party data/registrations and paid subscriber conversions.
Position overview
The new VP of Newsletters and Email Operations will be responsible for our newsletter strategy, list growth and list health. The role will report to the Chief Customer Officer, who oversees a new and fast-growing subscriptions unit at Fortune. In this deeply cross-functional role, close collaboration with other departments will be critical. Our new VP of Newsletters will be expected to forge close working relationships with editorial, advertising and product & technology teams.
What you will do
- Create a solid baseline for newsletter KPIs and define ambitious growth goals for each editorial newsletter. Establish key metrics and align on reporting cadence with the executive team
- Define a newsletter acquisition and list management strategy, making sure fortune.com website real estate is used as efficiently as possible, and lists are pruned regularly
- Redesign the signup modules we use on fortune.com and other channels to drive newsletter subscriptions, and the rules governing their deployment
- Create clear alignment processes with our advertising and conference teams around sales and delivery of newsletter-specific deals, the usage of our ESP to communicate with customers, etc.
- Launch and manage a cross-department newsletter/email working group
- Hire an ESP manager to deploy newsletters and support day-to-day operations
- Potentially create a newsletter referral program
- Experiment with paid acquisition strategies for select newsletters
What we expect
We are looking for approximately 8 years of experience in digital marketing. Newsletter experience, a familiarity with ESPs/CRMs and experience leading marketing teams is a plus.
The consumer marketing organization at Fortune is small and lean. We need a self-starter who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves. To succeed in this role, you should be
- a skilled relationship builder (because newsletter growth depends on various departments collaborating seamlessly)
- able to switch gears easily from the big picture to operational details, communicating effectively with the CEO and junior employees
- comfortable with ambiguity, while possessing exceptional analytical acumen and affinity to data and analytics
- unafraid to prioritize projects based on estimated revenue impact
