VP of Data Strategy and Insights
Job Description
The Farmer’s Dog is the fastest growing pet health service company in the US, and was born from a mission to change the landscape of pet health, providing dogs and their humans with honest, smart, and simple care – a fresh proposition in an industry riddled with manipulative and misleading marketing. We’re starting by radically improving the $100 billion pet food market, replacing bulk bags of highly-processed pellets with a personalized subscription service that sends healthy, freshly-made dog food, balanced by top veterinary nutritionists, directly to customers’ doors. Our ultimate goal is to create innovative, honest, and delightful experiences across all aspects of pet care, and we believe our direct-to-consumer business model, holistic approach to growth, and dynamic and forward-thinking culture uniquely position us to shepherd this backwards industry into the future.
To date, The Farmer’s Dog has delivered hundreds of millions of meals nationwide and raised over $150M in funding to help us build a company as healthy as the dogs who are eating those meals. Join us as we continue to develop ways of bringing peace of mind to our customers, health to their companions, and much-needed change to the way people feed and care for their pets.

Where You’ll Come InThe VP of Data Strategy & Insights (DSI) is a strategic and effective leader known for their experience building high-functioning, high impact teams at scale. This role will take the foundation we have and evolve it effectively with the business, designing the architecture and processes to harvest, harness and act on our data. Given our direct and long-term relationship with our customers, we have the unique opportunity to create a holistic view of our business and customers by leveraging data across millions of touch points. As a strongly data-driven and data-informed organization, we believe these insights are an incredible competitive advantage that will help us continue to design amazing experiences for our customers, personalize their products, and transform the industry -- ultimately delivering peace of mind to millions of pet owners.
As a core center of excellence, the DSI purpose is to drive exceptional business results by empowering TFD, from individual associates to executive leadership, to make insightful decisions faster and faster. You will understand and anticipate needs across the organization, and develop and execute a successful roadmap to accomplish our ambitious goals, which you’ll help us change and evolve. You’ll tell with data to make decisions easier, then work to “teach to fish” by raising the data literacy of broader teams in order to help the whole company to move faster and smarter.Â
We’re a pragmatic organization - we want to provide people with the information, products and services to best care for their dogs. This role should be a builder, someone who loves to continuously move forward with impact.
How You’ll Make an Impact- Build insights at scale - elevating our foundational data systems and analytics to allow for faster, better, and more systematic insights
- Set a long term vision for the data function and develop and execute successful data roadmaps and quarterly OKRs alongside functional roadmaps in partnership with the cross-functional team
- Build a best-in-class function that embodies TFD culture, operates with vitality, clarity, and context, maintains early-stage intensity at scale, and strives for excellence and impact every day
- Equip decision-makers to execute on business and product strategy by visualizing context and understanding the story data is telling, while not sacrificing progress for perfection
- Evolve the function to a more decentralized and embedded design while ensuring strong collaboration and consistent data standards, and build the organizational processes for scale including headcount planning, leveling, operating rhythms and career development
- Set objectives and success metrics for the data function and strive to exceed them.
- Champion a strategic experimentation culture that balances incremental building and big bets, and grow data literacy in the organization to speed effective decision making as we scale
- Teach by example - you will demonstrate curiosity, nuance and first principle thinking as we solve new and complex problems for our customers
- Deeply understand the business and our customers to identify opportunities to improve the team’s impact and decision makingÂ
- Collaborate closely with TFD leadership to develop our long term strategy based on breakthrough insightsÂ
- Design, build and drive overall strategy, methodology, and roadmap for the processes, systems, tools and capabilities required to produce and maintain our core data assets
- Lead and grow a highly engaged, productive and cohesive Data group that understands their mission and is compelled to contribute
- 8+ years leading data-teams, with at least 4 of those in consumer-focused companies
- Past experience as a technical expert in engineering, data analytics, business analysis, or business intelligence prior to leadership/management experienceÂ
- Proven expertise in building high impact data functions that operate with streamlined working processes at scale and form incredibly tight cross-functional partnerships and collaborations
- Evolve the org design strategically based on TFD’s needs
- Comfortable executing yourself, but know that your impact is much more significant when you’re leading through a team. You have extensive experience working cross-functionally at both the leadership and hands-on level
- Strong familiarity with modern data stacks to handle huge volumes of real time data
- Assume best intentions and never let feedback fester.
- Direct and caring communicator who drives change across functional boundaries and believes in unlocking colleagues’ impact with the right context for technical and non-technical audiences
- Comfortable in ambiguity - and make decisions based on incomplete information and foster good judgment for satisficing within your teams
- Excellent across multiple data disciplines including  dbt, R, SQL, Python, data warehousing and ETL technologies, statistics and data science, BI tools, and modern engineering practices
- Market-competitive compensation and equity packages
- Comprehensive Healthcare, Dental, and Vision
- 12 week paid parental leave
- Competitive 401k plan with company match
- Flexible paid time off policy
- Discounted fresh food for your pup
- Your pet interrupting video calls is now a feature, not a bug
