VP of Engineering

IEX Cloud is hiring a Vice President, Engineering to support our growing organization. The position will report directly to the General Manager/Head of IEX Cloud and will initially manage our 3 teams of software developers and systems reliability engineers with high potential to significantly scale the team over time. We are looking for an inspired engineering leader with significant experience building highly distributed, elastic web systems leveraging modern database and messaging technologies. This position will also be a member of the leadership team of IEX Cloud, expected to participate in strategic and operational planning for the business and drive overall commercial and technical success.

• Intuitively know how to balance priorities between technical mentorship, people management, and cross-functional collaboration
• Believe in supporting the Web Developer community by building products that delight Developers and make them more productive
• Passionate about growing talent, driving healthy team dynamics, and making the call on the long-term technical architecture decisions
• Likely read Inspired and Empowered by Marty Cagan at least once. Probably twice. And you believe in deeply collaborating with your colleagues to build impactful products that solve real customer needs.

What You'll Do:

Team Development And People Management

• Lead and grow a global organization of best-in-class engineering managers and individual contributors, owning the recruiting and talent strategy for the whole team
• Initially manage 3 teams of software developers and systems reliability engineers, focusing on team leader and senior individual contributor development to help them progress professionally and meet their professional goals
• Provide the strategic context to the engineering group, tying commercial and technical vision to their day-to-day work
• Coach teammates to escalate blockers and dependencies in order to mitigate risks, drive cross-functional collaboration (within engineering and with other groups), and raise the overall accountability of the team

Technical Contributions

• You will be a technical ambassador, a recognized leader in reliability, quality, usability, and operational excellence
• As a member of the IEX Cloud technical leadership team, you will participate in setting long-term direction of the technical architecture and interact extensively with the technical leadership team of IEX Group, representing IEX Cloud’s roadmap and technical contributions
• Consistently improve knowledge of the modern web ecosystem, tooling, and patterns and can provide code review and technical leadership for front-end and back-end web developers
• Contribute a strong point of view on common software engineering management concerns, including how to improve quality; how to manage technical debt; and how to keep teams happy and productive

Collaboration Within a Product Team

• Collaborate cross functionally with Product, Customer Success/Support, Sales and Marketing to understand the user needs and requirements to succeed in our market
• Ability to translate broad company strategies into clear, specific objectives and actionable plans, building passion and buy-in across teams
• Collaborate with Product in each 6-week planning period to agree on priorities and scope of work that can be delivered to ensure we’re working on the right things with committed scope
• Inspire teammates to understand the problems we are trying to solve rather than just the solutions

Delivery Management

• Evangelize high quality technology and software development processes within the team, working closely with other teams to deliver delightful customer outcomes
• Work closely with senior leadership and product teams to enable our engineers to ship fast and predictably with confidence, while ensuring the efficient use of resources and providing an amazing customer experience, even in times of crisis
• Ensure there is clear understanding of product requirements, design technical solutions, and help the team ship a great product experience
• Deliver against business and product goals in each planning period by maintaining and grooming a prioritized technical roadmap
• Drive high standards across the team in maintaining Jira to keep transparency of the team’s progress (and blockers)
• Ensure team productivity and shared load across developers
• Monitor team and system performance and proactively improve them

Planning and Budgeting

• Own the organizational and annual budget planning for the engineering team, forecasting headcount and budget growth to meet the business objectives of the team
• Manage within the agreed upon budget and update the budget over the course of the year to the extent required if business trends diverge from plan
• Remain agile and deliberate in hiring to business needs, with a focus on small, high-performing teams, rather than just size of the organization

You Are:

• 10+ years of operational experience, running large scale distributed systems such as Kubernetes and related systems across multiple global and regionalized instances
• 10+ years of hands-on software engineering and at least 5 years of engineering management experience, preferably delivering a highly scalable service with billions of daily transactions
• 10+ years of experience creating and scaling data platforms and pipelines, ETL systems, and partner integrations
• Experience scaling engineering organizations from start-up to scale-up
• Experience and confidence with executive level engagement and presentations
• Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with internal teams (e.g. Product, Support, Customer Success, Sales, Marketing) to deliver successful product and business outcomes
• Experience building tools and platforms for software developers
