VP - Site Reliability Engineering (IE05HE)

Reporting to Chief Technology Officer, the Site Reliability Engineering Enablement Lead will be accountable for overseeing The Hartford's transformation and adoption of Site Reliability Engineering. The candidate will design and oversee the deployment of the Site Reliability Engineering practices across the enterprise. The SRE Enablement lead will help lead a transformation of application and infrastructure teams towards SRE, where the SRE teams will learn the skills and acquire the resources to create, maintain and improve - observability, infrastructure automation, deployment, monitoring, performance, and capacity management tools and practices. The candidate will help the teams learn to develop software solutions and use/connect off the shelf tools to solve production operations problems, improve resiliency, and stability.

Responsibilities include:
  • Lead the rollout of the SRE practice across The Hartford.
  • Establish SRE vision, set the strategic direction, and drive the sustained advancement of SRE practices across the enterprise.
  • Partner with CIO and Infrastructure leaders to establish a pragmatic change management plan to transform their teams through upskilling, hiring/recruiting, and vendor management. Employ cross organizational senior leadership, especially by partnering with Line of Business, Architecture, Security/Governance/Risk, and Development organizations.
  • Partner with Architecture teams to ensure reliability principles and patterns are adopted or modified utilizing a data driven approach
  • Partner with Vendor consultants, Change Management Leads, Training Leads, Change Champions, and the Executive Sponsor on the transformation
  • Implement and drive the maturity of the SRE profession across The Hartford. Identify and retain top talent. Identify top talent with SRE experience to increase their eminence across The Hartford and the industry.
  • Serve as SRE champion and visionary across the organization.
  • Help establish SRE best practices, tooling, processes, metrics, goals, and automation. Build SRE measurement capabilities in the application ecosystem, as well as drive quality and operational accountability across the organization.
  • Partner with and support the Software Engineering Community of Practice to promote adoption within the engineering teams. Be an ambassador for SRE across Hartford
  • Represent Hartford at external events to attract talent, partners, and clients.

Skills Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
  • Experience with Resiliency and Reliability engineering
  • 15+ years of professional experience in Information Technology analysis, design, application development, IT Operations, and Technology leadership
  • 5+ years proven experience in leading Site Reliability Engineering Teams.
  • 3+ years experience transforming Site Reliability Engineering Teams
  • 10+ years experience in a management role in IT
  • Development experience with Java, Python, Go and associated frameworks
  • Understanding of networking and cloud technologies such as: security, load balancing, network routing protocols.
  • Customer focused, understanding specific use cases from different groups and challenging the team to build solutions that reduce user issues and can be easily supported.
  • Proficient knowledge in the following key areas: Hardware Architecture (performance testing, monitoring, operations), Hardware Benchmarking (program management, network management), Design (compliance, security), Network Engineering (planning, provision)
  • Knowledge of one specific infrastructure technology and basic programming languages or database management systems (Java, PERL, Python)
  • Intermediate understanding of line of business technology drivers and their impact on architecture design
  • Knowledge of more than one specific infrastructure technology
  • Ability to think creatively to deliver solutions through continuous improvement
  • Technical understanding of monitoring (i.e. Dynatrace)
  • Hand-on experience with cloud-based technologies and tools especially in deployment, monitoring, and operations, such as Splunk and Elasticsearch
  • Knowledge and experience on AWS
  • Working knowledge of modern development technologies and tools such Agile, CI/CD, Git, and Jenkins.
  • Experience using one of the following configuration management tools: Ansible, Puppet, Terraform
  • Strong communication both written and verbal and organization skills. Technical writing and documentation skills.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$210,720 - $316,080
