And, more practically, it means discussing briefs before they're fully written (internally and externally) and being open to feedback (and able to push the work) upstream and downstream of the strategic assignments.

Our client relationships span different industries and life stages: from start-ups like Lightricks and Tia to established Fortune 500 companies like JetBlue, JPMorgan Chase, PepsiCo, and Starbucks, among others.

We are looking for a VP, Strategy who is excited about joining and complementing a brand and creative strategy practice that's driven by intelligence, insights, and data. You will lead our core strategy work, working directly with the SVP, and partnering with the leads of our Research & Analytics and Community & Content practices across a wide range of strategic needs and outputs (from upstream strategic consulting to creative strategy, to audience research & intelligence, to platform & content strategy, and beyond). The ideal candidate should have significant experience in spearheading projects from start to finish, leading and coordinating with integrated cross-functional teams (including, analytics, community, creative, and account), and presenting to c-level clients. The candidate is a true team player with the ability to work independently, and manage and move projects effectively, on time, and with excellence. They will assess and scope incoming asks, demonstrate deep cultural knowledge and research capabilities, and build and enhance the practice over time.

Roles + Responsibilities:

  • Leading the strategy process for various key clients
  • Understanding client business needs, and how strategies will deliver on objectives and KPIs
  • Developing insights about the attitudes, needs, and behaviors across different audiences
  • Uncovering and interpreting relevant cultural and social trends
  • Assessing competitive landscapes & uncovering white space opportunities
  • Developing and delivering strategy across brand, customer experience, and innovation lanes, from vision and essence to positioning and messaging architecture
  • Partnering with creative teams to ensure that creative embodies the strategic objective
  • Evaluating and contributing to channel and tactical plans to ensure that the strategic intent of the positioning is achieved
  • Building planning scope through value-added thinking and deliverables
  • Sourcing and developing new talent to support growing business needs
  • Excellent storytelling/writing (and the ability to coach team members to do the same)
  • Own and develop briefs that are clear, concise, and inspiring - leading inspirational work, as well as designing and leading senior-level client workshops to do the same
  • Developing strong account/client relationships as a key strategic and business partner

The salary band for this role is $200,000 - $250,000. Where a prospective new hire's base salary will fall within this band depends on several factors including their qualifications and experience, the skill level required in the role, market rates, and the salaries of existing crew members at Big Spaceship within the same role to maintain equity.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of relevant experience as a marketing strategist, consultant working within an advertising/marketing agency or consulting environment
  • Experience or passion working at the intersection of, brand and creative strategy
  • Robust primary and secondary research skills required - ability to creatively use a mix of tools to uncover deep organizational, media, and audience insights; experience designing, conducting, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative target audience research
  • Ability to go deep in research to craft compelling narratives that clarify business and brand problems and opportunities
  • Demonstrated ability to construct insightful, data-informed strategies (presentations, POVs, etc.) that guide creative
  • Passionate about the work itself and collaborating with a cross-disciplinary team to produce amazing work
