JOB DESCRIPTION:
Job Summary
Officer position responsible for providing overall underwriting direction and execution for the Small Business segment. Manages Small Business underwriting guidelines, leads the Small Business Underwriting team, and provides counsel for the effectiveness, compliance and customer experience of Small Business's automated rating, pricing and underwriting.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Develops and maintains underwriting guidelines for the Small Business segment to ensure the integrity and consistency of Small Business Underwriting in accordance with the low-touch underwriting model and aligned with CNA Commercial practices.
2. Develops and maintains underwriting best practices within the Small Business Underwriting function, in accordance with federal and state regulations, to ensure the integrity of the Small Business underwriting practices and products. This includes Underwriting risk selection, appropriate use of scheduled rating, company and tier placement for the portion of the book that is manually underwritten as well as participation in the governance of automated underwriting occurring on Small Business platforms.
3. Collaborates with other Small Business functions and Commercial areas, Product and Segment Management to help achieve continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for Small Business.
4. Leads, directs and has full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with strategic direction. Manages performance, execution to underwriting guidelines and service levels.
5. Provides overall direction for underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management for manually underwritten policies in Small Business.
6. Acts as senior level referral officer for exceptions to guidelines and authority for Small Business.
7. Collaborates with business partners in Risk Control, Actuarial, Claim, Operations, Legal, Compliance and other areas to address governance and compliance issues related to underwriting practices.
8. Provides underwriting point of view along with other Small Business Leaders into the overall Small Business Strategy, agency facing system experience, CNA.com experience and other agent and customer interaction points balancing underwriting needs with all stakeholder groups in the delivery of Small Business' agent and customer experience.
9. Conducts research, analysis and development of insurance products. Assimilates trends in the industry, determines underwriting best practices and contributes to training and development curricula for a product line or segment.
10. May participate in rating bureau boards to keep abreast of industry, rating, coverage and benefit issues.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationship
Senior Vice President, Underwriting, Small Business
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent.
2. Typically a minimum of 12 years of related work experience, with seven years management experience.
3. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation preferred.
