Job Description

At the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, we’re passionate about fueling a movement for a healthy internet! We do this by engaging movement leaders and inspiring thousands around the world to take action alongside us. Our main website and our web properties are key to our ability to deliver on that promise.

The Web Platforms Manager leads the team that stewards Mozilla Foundation’s investment in its main website along with an array of web properties that are essential to our constituents, or programs, and our movement.

The role of the Web Platforms Manager is to seek out and understand the web-related needs of the organization; synthesize these needs into achievable deliverables related to platform enhancements, fixes, or user support; own and maintain the platform roadmap; and manage the team to effectively deliver on it. In addition this position will also manage and coordinate closely with the developer team lead and the UX/UI design team lead. This person must be an excellent communicator and advocate both upwards and downwards for leadership, the staff and constituents, as well as the web team and relevant external consultants’ capacity to deliver. The relevant product domain includes the evolving functionality of the main website and other distributed websites and microsites, custom web tools, and web-based elements of other digital products (i.e. donation, signup, event pages, etc).

Note that the Web Platforms team is not responsible for creating content, but is focused on providing colleagues in areas such as programs, communications, fundraising, and other areas across the organization an ever-improving platform with which to do their work. The Web Platform Manager also works hand in hand with the other product managers on the highly coordinated Technology Accelerator Team to manage the organization’s technology platforms in a coordinated fashion.

Technical experience and understanding are helpful, and an array of experience in strategic technical roles is important. However, this role will be significantly more focused on strategy, communication, and leadership, as well the ability to translate user needs into well-defined requirements to be implemented by both internal and external technical resources. The most important technical skill is the ability to manage technical staff and external developers and to understand the details of what they are doing.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Create/own/manage platform roadmap for websites and web properties.
  • Gather organizational requirements for web products, working closely with staff and leaders around the organization.
  • Proactively identify and seek out opportunities for perpetual improvement of web properties.
  • Research, understand, and evaluate the landscape of options, opportunities, costs.
  • Prioritize the landscape of possible interventions into a strategic and achievable roadmap.
  • Where appropriate lead overarching platform migration analysis.
  • Identify, hire, and manage the web team to maintain high quality function of both technical and user support-side web functions.
  • Engage and manage external expertise for technical execution and strategic guidance.
  • Oversee proactive training and support staff whose ethos is to assist colleagues around the organization in effective use of the platforms.
  • Protect priorities of the organization in the team’s work and the capacity of the staff to implement at the required level of quality.
  • Help appropriate content and creative leads around organization understand and own their essential roles in content creation, strategy, and prioritization.
  • Stay abreast of web technology and design innovations.
  • Coordinate effective solutions with peer product managers on overlapping projects.
Required Qualifications:
  • At least 3-5 years experience in web product management or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the various components of the web creation and development process, and the areas of expertise involved.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A natural proclivity to be an ally to colleagues, excited to help others succeed.
  • History of building trusted relationships with colleagues -- communicating transparently and delivering on projects and commitments.
  • A history of participation in successful web projects.
  • Experience with QA testing processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing a high-functioning team
  • Experience and comfort collaborating effectively in a virtual environment.
  • Experience with and opinions about ways to form the most productive working relationships with external experts and firms.
  • Experience with or detailed understanding of concepts behind UX and UI.
  • Experience with web testing and optimization.
You may be a fit for this role if:
  • You’d rather spend the majority of your day communicating with people than designing or coding.
  • You may feel relatively agnostic about generating specific content or engagement strategies, but you’re thrilled to work with colleagues who have formed those opinions and to help them realize their visions.
  • You can get a bit embarrassingly excited about the ways you’ve optimized your task management systems.
  • When someone comes to you with a request, you can do that thing where you dig into it together with a collaborative spirit and end up getting to the bottom of the need behind the request even if the solution looks different from where the request started.
