Summary

You will serve as a WELDER in the WEAPONS MAINTENANCE PRODUCTION BRANCH (2831) of NMCLANT ORDMAINT.

This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You are required to be certified in and maintain current Category IV (GMAW) I" Aluminum, Category 2B 17-7, IB (SMAW) and Class IV (TIG) certifications.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION:
  • Experience setting up arc welding equipment, connecting ground and electrode holders, feeds, generator, transformer and items to be welded.
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, NAVSEA/NAVAIR drawings, weapons specifications or other ordnance publications and the associated information pertinent to the operation, maintenance, modification, certification, and test change proposals.
  • Experience disassembling and separating components/parts of ordnance devices.
  • Experience conducting elementary electrical tests such as continuity (interface tests), multimeter daily checks, ignitor circuit tester checks, no voltage checks, booster/rocket motor squib tests, and various tests set daily.
  • Experience repairing, modifying, gauging, inspecting, assembling/disassembling and performing intermediate level maintenance on ordnance items.
  • Experience identifying, stenciling, packaging, and preparing for shipment or ordnance items.
  • Experience processing discrepancy reports as required.

Additional information

The position often requires irregular hours. This position requires rotating shift work. This position requires evening and weekend work.

This position regularly and routinely handles and physically performs tasks with conventional ammunition, ammunition components, explosives and related hazardous materials and as such requires certification in accordance with ''Navy Personnel Ammunition and Explosives Qualification and Certification Program" OPNA VINST 8023.24A.

Employee must successfully complete explosives safety courses as required by NAVSEA OP 5 Volume 1 and NMCCEDINST 8023.IA, including Basics of Naval Explosives Hazard Control, Materials Handling Equipment (MHE) Operator Training, Explosives Hazardous Materials Driver training, and refresher courses as required.

This position may contain duties falling under Special Access Programs.

Work requires kneeling, crouching, stooping and standing. May be required to lift 50 pounds infrequently while handling containers and associated equipment. Work requires close attention to detail; therefore, necessitating good vision in both eyes and good hearing.

Must be capable of participating in field testing ordnance mechanical equipment at various Naval establishments and aboard surface ships. Must successfully pass an explosive administered by the Brach Medical Clinic.

Works in noisy, dirty and smoky areas. Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electric shock, burns, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
