Writer for SchoolCEO Magazine
Job Description
About Apptegy
Since our start in 2015, we’ve gone from a group of individuals to a community pushing toward the same goal of building a fantastic company with great people, great products, and, most importantly, a great culture. To date, we have grown from a handful of school districts in Arkansas to thousands of school districts across the U.S.
Apptegy is building products to empower school leaders to run better schools. We have the opportunity to help schools as they go through a radical shift in how they operate and to provide great technology to make that transition.
We are growing quickly and are focused on bringing thoughtful, high-performers together to craft an experience for our clients and to make Apptegy a better place than it already is.
About SchoolCEO
SchoolCEO is Apptegy’s quarterly magazine for school superintendents and other K-12 leaders. Provided free to more than 20,000 readers—both clients and non-clients—it’s the only magazine focused on marketing in K-12 public education. We work to provide school leaders with the unique and actionable ideas they need to brand and market their schools in a highly competitive environment. By publishing high-quality original content—not “advertorials”—we are establishing Apptegy as a thought leader in the realms of school communication, branding, and recruitment.
In this role, you will:
- Write and revise multiple long-form articles (2,000+ words) for each issue of our quarterly magazine, meeting deadlines as assigned.
- Read, edit, and proofread work from other writers on the team to prepare articles for publication.
- Conduct frequent calls with superintendents, school communications directors, and other school leaders to build relationships and maintain a network of sources.
- Develop (or maintain) a deep working knowledge of K-12 education, especially in the areas of leadership, marketing, and communications.
- Pitch ideas for issue themes and individual articles.
- Work with our Content Marketing Manager to optimize online content for search engines.
To succeed in this role, you must:
- Have a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
- Be passionately interested in K-12 education, marketing, or both.
- Have a demonstrated track record of transforming complex ideas into understandable and engaging writing.
- Be detail-oriented and highly organized.
- Be comfortable approaching school leaders and other sources with interview requests.
- Stay calm under pressure and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Communicate effectively and enjoy engaging with others.
- Appreciate receiving frequent constructive criticism and thoughtfully provide it to others.
- Be aware of areas where you need to grow and continually strive to improve.
Bonus points for:
- Previous experience in either journalism or K-12 education
- Familiarity with AP Style
- Experience with or interest in conducting in-depth research and/or working with data
- Experience with presenting information in front of an audience
What else should I know?
We take our responsibility as a company seriously and aim to make this the best job that you’ve had (and one that sets you up for future success).
We want your day at work and your time at home to be a joyful experience, that’s why we provide:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents
- Matching 401(k) retirement plan
- Discretionary/flexible paid time off policy
- Parental leave
- Dependent Care FSA
If the challenge of building a rapidly growing startup excites you as much as it does us, we hope that you’ll consider joining us.
