Summary The typical seasonal period is April/May through October/November but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April - May 2026. Duties The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. Duty Locations are: Mount Rainer National Park: Whiskeytown National Recreation Area: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park: As a Masonry Worker the duties will include the removal/demolition of existing failing wet/dry walls, excavations, and construction of wet/dry masonry. The position will be required, at times, to work without supervision. As directed by the supervisor, you will assist in 1) removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair or implementation of new wet/dry walls; 2) implementing prescribed preservation treatments (excavating, resetting, wet/dry laying rock, etc.); and 3) recording the location, time, materials, and labor involved in the treatment process. You will be responsible for selecting the proper tools and materials and maintain responsibility for keeping all tools and equipment utilized in a clean, serviceable, and safe condition. You will also perform rough carpentry and painting work. Work is be conducted in a safe manner for the protection of self and fellow workers, particularly when using mechanical tools and equipment. Assignments involve strenuous exertion including hiking, climbing steep slopes to project work site, bending, lifting heavy objects (rocks of up to 50 pounds), stooping, and kneeling. At Mount Rainier: The primary purpose of the position is to assist in the maintenance, repair and stabilization of historic structures and sites built of stone and mortar in relation to park road assets and backcountry structures. This position may require frequent overnight backcountry stays. Incumbent may be required to live in remote wilderness settings for extended periods of time and at elevations of 10,000 feet. Access to work site may require backcountry travel via maintained trail, or unmaintained snowfield to high camp work sites. At Sequoia and Kings Canyon: The primary purpose of the position is to assist in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of structures and sites built of stone and mortar in relation to Park trails. This position requires frequent overnight backcountry stays. Incumbent will be required to live in remote Wilderness settings for extended periods of time. Physical Demands: Performs heavy lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, carrying adobes, stone, mortar, and aggregates, soil, scaffolding, and other small equipment. Normally required to climb ladders or scaffolding to heights of from 5 to 30 feet and bend, stand, and kneel for long periods of time. Sometimes required to hike long distances and climb steep slopes. Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions. Assignments involve exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar, screening soil, backfilling, and driving to and from outlying areas. Incumbent may be subject to cuts, bruises, insect bites, danger of falling when on ladder or scaffolding, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading equipment and materials. Incumbent will be provided and will be expected to wear prescribed personal protective equipment. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents in the nature of cleaning fluids and preservation compounds, some of which are considered hazardous. Work with chemical agents will be conducted within approved manufacturer's specifications and in accordance with the unit's precautions. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
