Qualifications In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. This position has a Basic Education Requirement: Degree in physical or natural science; or engineering that included 30 semester hours in courses such as hydrology, physical science, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography or the management or conservation of water resources AND 6 semester hours in calculus (both differential and integral) AND 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels OR have a combination of education and experience that includes the coursework shown above plus appropriate experience such as field or laboratory work requiring application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to make observations, take samples, operate instruments, assemble, analyze, and interpret data and report findings orally and in writing. For the GS-07: Meet the basic requirements AND have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as monitoring and collecting, interprets, and analyzes a range in hydrologic data in support of projects designed by senior scientist. Work in team efforts to implement projects to restore watersheds and improve water quality; OR meet the Basic Education Requirement AND have one (1) full year of graduate education in hydrology or a directly related field OR meet the Basic Education Requirement and meet the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A) OR meet the Basic Education Requirement AND I possess an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only directly related graduate level education in excess of the first six months may be combined with experience. At the GS-09 Level: Meet the basic requirements AND have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-07) in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience collecting, summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting climatological, surface water, ground water, or water quality data and determining the effects of proposed treatments and surface disturbing actions on hydrologic resources OR meet the basic requirements AND completed 2 years of graduate education leading to a master`s degree in hydrology or directly related field OR meet the basic requirements AND Combination of education and experience. At the GS-11 Level: Meet the basic requirements AND have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) in the federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience providing input and advice on watershed actions or plans associated with forest management, wildlife management, road construction or other activities; providing technical advice on water rights applications and claims; assessing, monitoring, and researching existing work on the nutrients, pollutants, other components in ground water and surface water; and determining short-term flood risks in identified areas OR meet the basic requirement AND completed 3 years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in hydrology or a directly related field OR meet the basic requirement AND a combination of education and experience. Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate/ graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work regularly combines both offices and field assignments. Field work requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, and climbing such as in regular and periodic construction activities and field inspections. Work may also include frequent lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less then 50 pounds. Field assignments may also involve operating small watercraft, driving motor vehicles to work sites, some of which may be remote, and include overnight stays in remote locations. Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate ricks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as: high noise levels, infectious materials, or toxic or irritating chemicals; travel in safety approved small aircraft and water craft; high winds and low or high temperatures; infestation of dangerous reptiles or poisonous plants, snakes, or insects; adverse weather conditions; noxious fumes; flammable liquids; or radiation. The work involves performing tasks in close proximity to rotating heavy mechanical and electrical machinery and may involve working within confined spaces for extensive periods of time. Special safety precautions such as protective clothing and gear are necessary. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the scientist complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor. Education This position falls under the Hydrology Series, 1315 and Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR). This position has a positive education requirement (see qualification section for education requirements). You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
