Job Description
Summary
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Duties
Directly supervise civilian employees and military personnel, as applicable.
Direct the placement of equipment, personnel, application of fire extinguishing agents and rescue personnel.
Perform firefighting duties such as handling hose, performing rescue operations, extinguishing fire, performing as a HAZ/MAT team member, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency first aid as required.
Ensure that personnel and equipment are in a constant state of readiness for immediate response to firefighting and rescue operations.
Plan work to be accomplished, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
Assign work and/or crew assignment based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and the capabilities of employees.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
One Year Supervisory probationary period required.
This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time
Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal right
This position is subject to 24-hour recall by the fire Chief, Deputy Chief, or Assistant Chiefs to provide services, repair or advise.
This position requires secret clearance.
Qualifications
Who May Apply: US Citizens
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience which inculdes:1) directing the activity of a fire crew 2) responding to emergency incidents such as hazardous material incidents and technical rescue operations; 3) driving and positioning apparatus such as aerial trucks, structural pumpers, water tenders, wild land apparatus, crash rescue vehicles, and ambulances in response to emergency incidents; 4) performing life support functions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess: Certifications Required: 1) Fire Officer II 2) Fire Instructor I, 3) Fire Inspector I, 4) HAZMAT Incident Commander, 5) Emergency Medical Technician (BASIC), 6) Airport Firefighter, 7) Driver Operator - Pumper, 8) Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF). certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M .
Maximum Entry Age (MEA)The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
One year trial/probationary period may be required.
Direct Deposit of Pay is required.
Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
