- This is a bargaining unit position.
- Mechanic must posses and maintain a current and valid Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Certification, including completion of the 608 Certification Exam (Universal), as a pre-qualification for this wage grade position.
- Mechanic must be able to become certified in CPR, Confined Space Safety, Backflow Prevention, and Refrigerant Recovery.

The selective placement factor is: You are required to possess and maintain a current Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Certification which includes completion 608 certification exam as a pre-qualification for this position (NOTE: This information must be in your resume and you must attach a copy of your license to be eligible for this position).
The Screen-out Element for this position is:
Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Diagnose, locate, and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (HVAC) such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, cooling coils, air handlers, water control valves, and air dampers; 2) Use trade tools and test equipment such as voltage, amperage, and ohm meters, electronic refrigerant leak detectors, temperature gauges, capacitors, and analyzers; 3) Follow safety procedures and practices when repairing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; and 4) Performs maintenance, calibration, modification, installation, repair and replacement of analog and direct digital controls (DDC) systems and equipment.

This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
The incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position. This position requires rotating shift work.
Physical Demands: Physical effort is required to maneuver equipment in and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. The work requires frequent carrying and setting-up of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally may lift items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. The work requires making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard to reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequent and may be for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: The incumbent works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Areas are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of the job and do not meet criteria for compensation by environmental or hazard pay.
By law, all persons with access to a system or container that stores refrigerant, including A/C coolant such as R-22 or R-410A, must have Universal Certification received form an EPA approved certifying program. Certification card must be carried on person while in a duty status. The card shall be presented upon request. Any change in certification status, any Clean Air Act Section 608, 40 CFR 82 violations, EPA fines or pending EPA investigations must be reported at once to the direct supervisor and department head. Decertification may be grounds for dismissal.
A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.
