Cement Mason

Description:Responsible for setting forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth and align them. Responsible for smoothing out, leveling, and finishing freshly poured concrete at jobs or construction sites. Reporting To:General Superintendent & Foreman (Specific to Jobsite) General Areas of Responsibility: • Set and check the forms that hold the concrete to ensure they are properly constructed. • Spread, level and smooth concrete using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float. • Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process. • Direct the casting of the concrete and supervise the laborers who use shovels or special tools to spread it. • Produce rough concrete surface, using broom. • Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge. • Signal truck driver to position truck to facilitate pouring concrete. Move shoot to direct concrete on forms. • Apply hardening and ceiling compounds to cure surface of concrete, and waterproof or restore surface. • Operate power vibrator to compact concrete. • Cutout damaged areas, drill holes for reinforcing rods and position reinforcing rods to repair concrete, using power saw and drill. • Fabricate concrete beams, columns, and panels. • Install anchor bolts, steel plates, door sills, and other fixtures and freshly poured concrete or pattern or stamp the surface to provide a decorative finish. • Mix cement, sand, and water to produce concrete, grout, or slurry using hoe, trowel, tamper, scraper, or concrete mixing machines. * * Working Conditions: The outdoor work requires prolonged standing, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping, squatting, bending and lifting heavy materials weighing up to 100 lbs. The physical ability is a very serious consideration since this is a daily requirement until retirement. Cement Masons must be able to tolerate loud noise, exposure to all types of weather and high exposed areas, and tolerate repetitive reaching and handling motion.
