Job Description

Us

Seed Health is a microbiome science company pioneering innovations in probiotics and living medicines to impact human and planetary health. Our scientific board comprises leading scientists, researchers, and clinicians across the fields of microbiology, immunology, bioinformatics, dermatology, oral health, vaginal health, gastroenterology, mental health, pediatrics, and nutrition.

Consumer innovations are commercialized under Seed® with a mission to bring much-needed precision, efficacy, education and perspective-shifting science communication to the global category of probiotics. Our efforts to set a new standard in probiotics, microbial innovation and translational communication have earned various accolades, including Fast Company's World Changing Ideas in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, and TIME's Best Inventions 2018.

We focus on categories where microbial innovations and microbiome-related products will disrupt and capture global market share in the coming years (e.g. oral care, skin care, infant health, etc.). We have built a strong foundation with breakthrough research and strong intellectual property, and believe there is a substantial opportunity to emerge as an innovative product line, backed by the most rigorous science.

For us, “brand” goes far beyond visual guidelines and a voice deck. It permeates through everything: every word, event, product launch, piece of translational content, campaign, social post, press release, email—and email signature. It evokes our worldview and integrity, offers a belief system and values that go far beyond the products we sell. It’s a mechanism we use to shift perspective—sometimes even our own. And in the confusing and hyperbolic world of health and “wellness,” it amplifies science, advocates for education, and champions humanism, even when shortcuts to growth are tempting. When expressed well, it’s like bacteria: invisible, impactful, and everywhere.

We are looking for an exceptional Design Director who can lead and manage our design team while creating and executing design strategies that will help us achieve our business objectives. As a Design Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the design process from concept to completion, including branding, product design, packaging, website design, and marketing materials. You will work closely with our marketing, product, and development teams to ensure that our design is aligned with our brand vision and business goals.

You are a wonderful hybrid: a creative storyteller, systems thinker, dot-connector, brand steward, detail-obsessor, inspiring leader, and most critically, an extraordinary designer in your own right. You’ve challenged the status quo to create, build, and evolve purpose-driven, category-defining, stand-for-something brands and have inspired loyal communities along the way.

Your nurture and vision will propel passion and depth, and your Muji-store organization (even your emails and Google Docs are objects of art) and process will unlock the team’s full potential. You take a “the magic is in the details” approach to all that you do, and are maniacal about making sure that anything that goes out into the world has had your eyes on it. You can simultaneously hold a stratospheric 33,000-feet view while rolling up your sleeves in the proverbial weeds to jump into Figma and do the thing.

We’re humans with big ideas, big convictions, and a big story to tell. We wake up each day to nudge science, health, and their impact forward. You (and your heart, brain, and visual storytelling) will help us get it right.

Responsibilities

  • Steward and execute the design strategy for Seed, including brand identity, product design, packaging, website design, experiential, and marketing materials.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality standards to ensure that all design work is of the highest quality, and meets the needs of our customers and the business.
  • Oversee the development of a wide range of design assets from initial conception through to execution, including sketches, storyboards, wireframes, prototypes, and final designs.
  • Find and develop working relationships with new creative vendors and collaborators as well as strengthening existing partnerships.
  • Work in close partnership with our Executive Creative Producer + Marketing Ops to ensure that design work is completed on time and within budget.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to meet project and team needs.
  • Ensure that all design work adheres to brand guidelines and design standards.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in design, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong portfolio of work that demonstrates expertise in branding, product design, packaging, website design, and marketing materials.
  • Experience developing brand identities and branding/creative guidelines.
  • Experience growing and scaling a consumer brand.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and mentor a team of designers.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts and strategies to cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Strong network of freelance collaborators that will follow you anywhere.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Expertise in design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Figma.
  • Bachelor's degree in design or a related field.
