Job Description
General Description:
We are seeking a motivated and organized Electrical Engineer to join the Universal Control of Scaled Spin Systems (UCS3) program, which is under the leadership of Prof. Jason Petta (HRL and UCLA). UCS3 combines the fast-paced and agile approach of an academic research environment with the abilities and scale of industrial technology development, with an emphasis on publishing achievements. The team’s objective is to transition “Loss-DiVincenzo” single spin qubits from academic scale few-qubit devices to industrial-scale quantum information processors. Research will initially take place on HRL’s Malibu campus and is expected to transition to UCLA’s Quantum Innovation Hub in two to three years.
Â
Essential Duties:
Coordinate the installation, testing, and official certification of two new dilution refrigerators (DRs).
Design a fully integrated “phase 1” measurement system capable of supporting approximately 10 microwave driven spin qubits. The measurement system will include all room temperature electronics and cabling, as well as cryogenic filtering, cabling, machined components, and sample holders.
Coordinate the buildout of phase 1 DRs.
Design a fully integrated “phase 2” measurement system that will enable the measurement of 50-dot UCS3 devices on a microwave compatible sample holder. The measurement configuration will include all room temperature electronics and cabling, as well as cryogenic filtering, cabling, machined components, and sample holders.
Coordinate the buildout of phase 2 DRs.
Assist with the design, assembly, procurement, and characterization of microwave control electronics.Â
Analyze results, document and report findings in oral presentations, written reports, and publications.
Effectively collaborate with other members of the team to identify and implement improvements to experimental infrastructure, control hardware/software, and device designs.
Â
Required Skills:
Hands on experience with the design and testing of electronic systems including electronic circuits, transmission lines, PCB’s and packaged devices.Â
Experience with high-speed RF/microwave measurement tools and techniques including vector network analysis (VNA), spectrum analysis, time domain reflectometry/transmission (TDR/TDT), real-time and sampling oscilloscopes.Â
Programming experience (Python, MATLAB, other modern scientific programming language)Â
Basic computer skills (spreadsheets, presentations, word processing) are required.
Experience with experimental physics or quantum science is a plus.Â
Â
Required Education:
BS + 2 years of experience, or MS in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Physics or a related field. Additional work experience or education may be considered for more advanced positions.
Â
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to climb ladders to use elevated test equipment.
Must be able to work safely in a laboratory environment and be on-site at least four days per week.
Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods.Â
Â
Special Requirements:
US Citizenship.
Must have or be willing to apply for and maintain a security clearance.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $99,705 - $124,683 + bonus + benefits.
