  • Pre-Employment Physical: Required. Individual must complete a pre-employment and an annual medical surveillance exam IAW DoD 6055.05-M.
  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position. The incumbent may be required to report to work in the event of a natural disaster, inclement weather, or crisis.

  • Completion of Supervisory Certification Program: Required
  • Must possess and maintain licenses and certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws. See Qualifications section for additional information.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Fire Chief your resume and supporting documentation must support:

A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
  • Supervising and managing the overall Fire and Emergency Services program.
  • Experience with fire prevention, public education, and life safety programs.
  • Determining proper emergency response/equipment needs in an emergency situation.
  • Managing the fire and emergency services training program.
B. Department of Defense (DoD) 6055.06-M, "Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program" identifies the level of performance required for all DoD Fire and Emergency Services personnel. The certifications listed below are the minimum mandatory certification requirements for this position. DoD Incumbents shall possess DoD Certifications, or equivalent accredited certifications from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or the National Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board):

Accredited Certification:
  • Fire Officer IV
  • Fire Instructor II
  • Fire Inspector II
  • Hazardous Materials Incident Commander
Other Requirements:
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR)
  • Valid State Driver's License.
Other training requirements that must be obtained within one year of employment and maintained:
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator, (EVOC)
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.


Additional information

Tour of Duty Hours: Incumbent Is considered essential to the day-to-day operations of the installation and Is subject to immediate recall or long term shift assignments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for extended periods of time.

Drug-Free Workplace: The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has established a Drug-Free Federal Workplace Policy.
