Job Description

  • Take the next step in your career in beautiful New Zealand
  • Opportunities available across the country
  • Enjoy a flexible and healthy work-life balance

Achieving the best health outcomes for New Zealand communities starts with expecting the best from ourselves. We ensure every member of our team has the opportunity to develop, grow and stay inspired. Here, you can make an impact on your community and on your own professional development, all whilst enjoying a flexible and healthy work-life balance.

About the role

With a publicly funded healthcare system, diverse clinical experience, and a welcoming team environment, Junior Doctors - referred to as Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) in New Zealand - will find a place to thrive professionally and personally.

Do you want the opportunity to explore and nurture your subspecialty interests? House Officers have the most significant exposure to various services, rotating every three months.

Our House Officer rotations are across departments including the following:

  • Surgical
  • Urology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Medicine
  • Assessment Unit
  • Emergency Department
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Ophthalmology
  • ENT
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Paediatrics
  • Psychiatry

Across our different hospitals, we manage thousands of inpatient and outpatient encounters each year, offering a rich and diverse clinical experience.

As a House Officer in New Zealand, your role is focused on providing front-line patient care while developing your clinical skills under supervision.

Daily responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Taking medical histories
  • Performing examinations
  • Ddocumenting patient notes
  • Ordering and reviewing investigations
  • Preparing discharge summaries

You will also participate in on-call and after-hours duties, managing acute admissions and escalating concerns to senior doctors as needed. Throughout this time, you will attend teaching sessions and clinical meetings, receiving feedback to support your professional development and prepare you for the next stage of your career.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council's website at?www.mcnz.org.nz
  • A minimum of one year post qualification experience

It is requirement of the Medical Council of New Zealand that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand, it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion. For more information, please visit MCNZ website re?EPIC Credentialing.

Salary and benefits

RMOs are employed under one of two collective agreements - the STONZ (Specialist Trainees of New Zealand) or RDA (Resident Doctors’ Association) MECA - depending on their membership.

Our RMOs enjoy a comprehensive package of allowances, penal rates, and leave entitlements designed to support wellbeing, recognise additional responsibilities, and provide flexibility throughout the training journey. This includes penal rates for nights, weekends, and public holidays, higher duties allowances when stepping into senior roles, and on-call or after-hours payments. Eligible roles may also offer meal and travel allowances, as well as relocation support.

In addition, RMOs receive generous leave benefits, including five weeks of paid annual leave, 12 paid public holidays (with time in lieu when rostered on), and a minimum of 10 days’ paid sick leave each year. Paid and unpaid parental leave is provided in line with legislation and the MECA, alongside study, exam, and professional development leave for those who are eligible.

Base salary range

  • House Officers (PGY1–PGY4+): approximately $44K USD - $60K USD ($78.5K NZD - $106.7K NZD)
