The Lead Show Carpenter is the lead scenic technician backstage, ensuring the quality, safety, and integrity of La Jolla Playhouse productions. They are responsible for leading the scenic stage crew and fly operators, maintaining a safe and positive environment both on and off stage, and working collaboratively with other departments, stage management, designers and performers throughout tech, previews, and performances.ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
• Execute and maintain the scenic technical requirements of the production, stage facilities and related equipment to ensure a safe and clean work environment from the first day of tech through closing.
• Collaborate with the Stage Management team and other Department Heads to ensure a safe and effective use of backstage resources and organization of scene shifts in support of the performance.
• Attend rehearsal room run throughs, run crew meetings, pretech focuses and dry tech as needed.
• Coordinate with Wardrobe, Props, Sound, and Lighting on the setup and maintenance of backstage areas, including leading the stage crew in the setup of things like quick changes booths and run lights and ensuring the stage and backstage are actorready for the first day of spacing rehearsal.
• Lead the Stage Crew, including stage crew and fly operators of up to ten in the safe and successful tech, preview, performance, understudy, putin rehearsals, and special events throughout the run.
• Test all scenery units and scenerymanaged effects before use during tech and communicate with stage management about their safe use.
• During tech, work collaboratively across departments to determine how to shift scenery to achieve the artistic vision.
• Secure the backstage areas during an emergency and contact the necessary personnel including stage management and front of house staff during such emergencies.
• Secure the facility and the backstage areas after technical rehearsals and performances.
• Ensure backstage safe work practices for stage crew and everyone interacting with scenic units. Communicate about risks identified on the Risk Assessment and oversee relevant mitigation steps. Notify appropriate supervisors and/or department heads of safety concerns related to other departments and Production Manager if safety concerns are not sufficiently addressed.
• Attend posttech production meetings. Work with Technical Director and/or Production Manager on next day schedule and communicate scenic run notes during the technical rehearsal process to the Technical Director.
• Inform and maintain paperwork including stage crew tracks, run notes, fly cueing, and swing assignments.
• Communicate in a professional and collegial manner when collaborating with all theatre personnel, professional creative teams, staff, management, and other visiting artists.
• Be an active participant in LJP’s work towards being a more inclusive workplace.
• Perform other duties as assigned in collaboration with theatre personnel, professional creative teams, staff, management and other visiting artists.QUALIFICATIONS:
• 2 plus years of professional experience in theatrical backstage management.
• Work well under pressure and time constraints, maintaining a calm demeanor in stressful situations.
• Possess strong verbal communication, critical thinking, attention to detail, problem solving, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated skills and detailed knowledge of counterweight fly systems, scenic carpentry, rigging, theatrical automation, soft goods/fabric maintenance and general repair.
• Knowledge of and dedication to safe working practices; ETCP Certification and OSHA 10 a plus.
• Commitment to uphold and meaningfully engage with the mission, vision, and values of La Jolla Playhouse.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Frequently ascends/descends and moves about on ladders, lifts, catwalks, and grids.
• Ability to work extended hours including nights and weekends during load in and technical rehearsals and Night and weekend hours throughout run of performance
• Frequently moves items weighing up to 50lbs and maneuvers heavy items with assistance.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
