Role Overview:

As a Platform Engineer at Illustrative Mathematics, you will play a key role in maintaining and evolving the infrastructure that supports our digital platform. You will work closely with our engineering team to build, deploy, and manage applications and services that drive our mission. This is a contract-to-hire position, offering an opportunity to transition to a full-time role based on performance.

Contractor Compensation + Availability

• The compensation is $50 - $85 per hour commensurate with experience
• Preference: a commitment to dedicate at least 30 hours per week to this work
• This position is approved to be compensated for up to 40 hours per week based on the workflow and contractor’s availability

Contractor-to-Hire Summary

• This position has the potential to become a full-time role with the company.
• The contractor must satisfactorily support the role as described for a minimum of 30 days up to a maximum of 90 days before the availability of a full-time position may become available.
• If a full-time position becomes available, the hiring range is expected to be $90,000 - $160,000 annually.

Key Responsibilities:

• Infrastructure Development: Build and maintain scalable infrastructure using AWS (Lambda, CloudFront, CloudTrail, S3, IAM, Secrets Manager, SES) and other cloud-based technologies.
• Application Support: Collaborate with application developers to deploy and manage applications built on Ruby on Rails and Next.js, ensuring smooth operation and high availability.
• Serverless Solutions: Develop and manage serverless applications using TypeScript and JavaScript, optimizing for performance and cost-efficiency.
• Version Control: Utilize git and GitHub for source code management, ensuring proper version control and collaboration.
• Hosting Management: Oversee deployments on Heroku and Vercel, ensuring our platform is reliable and performant.
• Security & Compliance: Implement best practices in security, working with tools like FusionAuth and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
• Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Use tools like Sentry for monitoring application performance and swiftly resolving any issues that arise.

Qualifications:

• Technical Proficiency: Strong experience with AWS services, Ruby on Rails, Next.js, and serverless architecture using TypeScript/JavaScript.
• Cloud Hosting: Familiarity with Heroku, Vercel, and cloud hosting environments.
• Version Control: Proficient in git and GitHub.
• Security Mindset: Experience with IAM, Secrets Manager, and FusionAuth or similar authentication/authorization systems.
• Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work effectively in a remote team environment, communicating clearly and often.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Strong troubleshooting abilities, particularly in cloud-based environments.
