Senior Designer

The Senior Designer position will be located in our Powertrain Technical Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan. In this role, the individual will work under minimal supervision while developing designs, complex layouts, and stack-ups of individual parts or assemblies. The incumbent practices limited required judgment in their work. The individual checks detail drawings and layouts. This includes producing detail drafting and other drafting related tasks as required. The incumbent continues any training of advanced CAD/CAM methods and starts and/or continues training of CAE methods. Knowledge of product mechanics for hydraulic, mechanical, magnetic and electro-mechanical products and systems is a plus.

POSITION SUMMARY

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop accurate complex designs, layouts, and stack-ups of individual parts or assemblies using accepted drafting standards and conventions
• Check detail drawings and layouts, which includes producing detail drafting and other drafting related tasks as required
• Determine critical dimension and tolerance information by working with engineering personnel
• Demonstrate knowledge and responsibility for the performance of the quality system and standards
• Develop and maintain customer and internal guide files, drafting standards, work instructions, and other tools intended to enhance the efficiency and abilities of his/her Design Group.

• Must be able to demonstrate a high degree of creativity and understanding of manufacturing processes and tolerances
• Must be able to demonstrate a high degree of understanding of material selection and material standards
• Considers and seeks out the impact of his/her actions within the team. Actively seeks collaboration with internal and external team members

Safety and Health - Responsible for completing required safety training, reporting and correcting any unsafe practices as appropriate, completing work activities in a safe manner, and complying with safety and health requirements for respective position.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Qualifications)

• Minimum 5 years CATIA design experience (modeling and detailing). Proficiency in Teamcenter is preferred also.
• Associate's Degree in Design/Drafting preferred
• Experience in the automotive industry or in a global manufacturing environment preferred
• Familiarity with Industry Standards related to Detailed Drawing Requirements, ASME, ANSI, ISO, etc.
• Understanding of complex design drawings, layouts, stack-ups, and verbal design instructions, and advanced understanding of applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
• Understanding of various manufacturing processes and associated tolerancing; casting, molding, machining, stamping is preferred
• Interpersonal relations require professional verbal and written communication skills and ability to manage technical details
• Must be a team player and have good organizational skills including the ability to prioritize, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines
• Proficient with Microsoft office products - Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Knowledge of Teamcenter is beneficial
