Summary
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Serve as a Lead Firefighter for DES.
This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Duties
Direct firefighting crew in the operation of firefighting vehicles and equipment.
Conduct demonstrations and lectures to instruct crew members concerning firefighting techniques, and fire protection and prevention methods.
Inspect and/or supervise inspections by crew members for fire hazards in all types of structures throughout the installation.
Respond to emergency EMS calls to ensure preliminary care is provided.
Make daily reports to supervisor pertaining to tour of duty.

Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine the incumbent's suitability for Federal employment.
This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
Works a 72 hour week on a 24 hour on, 24 hour off basis which includes weekends and holidays. May be subject to recall.
The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
Must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
The incumbent must report for duty during inclement weather.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) performing rescue operations; (3) detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; and (4) conducting inspections of facilities or buildings, alarm detection, or suppression systems.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess: Firefighter I & II, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, and HAZMAT Technician certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

This position requires a 1 year probationary period during which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.

Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.
Permanent Change of Station (PCS) allowances may be authorized, subject to the provisions of the Joint Travel Regulations and an agency determination that a PCS move is in the Government Interest.
Recruitment and relocations incentives MAY be authorized.
Student loan repayment MAY be authorized.
Salary negotiations for those candidates who are new to Federal service MAY be authorized.
Credit for prior non-federal work experience and certain military service for determining annual leave accrual rate MAY be authorized.
This position has been identified as a primary position for Firefighter Special Retirement Coverage.
Applicants initial appointment to a covered primary Firefighter Special Retirement Coverage position must be appointed by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37.
The maximum entry age for positions covered under this retirement is 37 years old. Retirement from this position is mandatory at age 57 with 20 years of SRC service. The maximum entry age may be waived under certain circumstances. Individuals who are past the maximum entry age limit, but previously served in a primary position, MAY be reinstated.
