Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Performs the full range of work involved in the repair, overhaul, installation, maintenance and servicing of a variety of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning units and system. Learn more about this agency Duties Modify, alter, repair and install unusually complex or unique air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Repair, troubleshoot, install, and maintain commercial and industrial heating units and systems. Work with engineering and design personnel to discuss plans, modifications, and user needs. Utilize Direct Digital Control systems to control operation of HVAC equipment. Apply a knowledge of operating systems such as Metasys, Extended Architecture, HVAC Pro and FX (Johnson Controls) to control HVAC systems. Requirements Conditions of employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position requires a valid state issued driver's license. This position requires a pre-employment physical examination and annual medical examinations following appointment. This position requires frequent lifting and carrying of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. This position may require the frequent climbing from ladders, scaffolding and platforms. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, stretching and climbing. Frequently works in cramped and awkward positions or in a shop area which is usually adequately heated and ventilated. Subject to variable temperatures when working in cold storage rooms and high temperatures when working on boilers. Frequently works in rooms on concrete floors, and is exposed to gas, ash, dust, and burns from scalding water and contact with heated system, parts. Work is frequently dirty and greasy. Subject to possible injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, electric shock, falls from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and dropping moderately heavy items, and possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gasses. This position requires frequent wearing of protective clothing and devices such as goggles, respirators, heavy aprons, hard hats, and gloves. This position is subject to emergency recall - 24 hours per day, 7 days a week to perform emergency repairs as necessary during off duty hours. Must obtain and maintain an EPA certification, from an approved institute, for the handling and control of refrigerants and other Ozone Depleting Substances (OZDs). The certification card must be carried by the incumbent when handling refrigerants. This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heating and Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Independently (1) install, maintain, and repair commercial and industrial HVAC systems contained in commercial facilities, buildings, and infrastructure; (2) interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints to repair HVAC systems; (3) maintain tools and equipment to troubleshoot and repair air conditioning units and/or refrigeration systems and; (4) recognize the cause of faulty equipment by pretesting, disassembling, adjusting, modifying and final testing commercial and industrial HVAC systems. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Installations and repairs are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Some parts of systems needing repair are in hard to reach places. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing more.
