Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This is a Maintenance Mechanic (HVAC), WG-4749-10 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Southwestern Division (SWD), Galveston District, Operations Division. Learn more about this agency Duties Serve as the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic with the responsibility for the operation, maintenance, repair and in house construction to all floating plant and project facilities. Perform the full range of work involved in the repair, overhaul, maintenance, and servicing of heating, ventilation and air conditioning units and systems. Operate diesel, gasoline, or electric powered vehicles with gross weight of up to and including 30,000 pounds capable of carrying loads weighing up to and including 10 tons. Service trucks, tractors, skid steer loader, small mowing tractors, ATVs, boats, standby generator, etc. Perform electrical, painting, masonry, plumbing and carpentry on a variety of equipment and facilities. Requirements Conditions of employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Testing Program; and is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. Incumbent will be required to travel/perform Temporary Duty (TOY) 25% of the time. Must possess and maintain a valid State-Issued Driver's License. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within (12) months of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain a USACE Boat Operator's license (26 feet and under) within twelve (12) months of employment. Incumbent is required to obtain a pre-employment physical and an annual health assessment. Current EPA Universal Certification is required. (Must submit a copy of your certificate with your application package.) Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic (HVAC) without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common facility maintenance and repair tasks. I can assist a journey-level employee with HVAC system maintenance. I can operate basic equipment like mowers and pickup trucks. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. PHYSICAL EFFORT Requires constant arm and leg movement and reaching, bending, and turning to operate hand and foot controls when driving tractor or motor vehicle. Exerts effort to maintain balance and position at controls of tractor. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Works on scaffolds and ladders, which require work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Exerts heavy physical effort frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over 75 pounds, pushing heavy loads, and operating heavy hand-held equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS Works inside and outside under abnormal temperature and weather conditions. Is exposed to the danger of tipping or overturning equipment when working on banks or side slopes. Is exposed but not limited to, hazards of river traffic, erratic river conditions, danger of falling overboard and drowning. In performing welding duties, is exposed to burns from sparks and hot metals, fumes and other hazards associated with welding. Employees are required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions and its use is mandatory. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. This position requires a 1 year probationary period during which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
