Job Description
Summary
These positions are located within the VA Denver Acquisitions and Logistics Center (DALC) in Golden, CO. The Materials Handler (MH) performs nonsupervisory work involving the physical receipt, identification, examination, classification, final acceptance, and disposition of materials and equipment in the DALC warehouse.
Duties
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Determines the physical condition of the incoming inventory;
Utilizes shipping documents, Denver Acquisitions and Logistics Center catalogs, drawings, and related documents;
Follows established procedures in receiving, checking, verifying, sorting, and classifying materials and equipment by stock numbers, size, classification, and condition;
Receives, counts, checks, and visually and physically examines a variety of incoming material, equipment, parts, medical/prosthetic devices and commodities;
Utilizes sophisticated computer systems and programs for the accurate accounting, quality control, discrepancy analysis and resolution, and identifying correct stock locations, for all incoming medical supplies;
Interprets and processes all related documentation and identifies discrepancies, defects, and detailed merchandise acceptability;
Unpacks boxes, crates, and cartons that contain specialized medical/prosthetic equipment, commodities, electronic equipment, sensitive, and fragile use items;
Verifies accuracy of shipment or delivery by comparing item type, size, length, ply, material, manufacturer, etc.;
Receives, stores, selects, and ships general or specialized bulk and bin materials and equipment;
Loads and unloads materials, checks, assembles, and processes documents, and routes materials and equipment to correct locations or storage areas; and,
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Rotating 8-hour shifts between the hours of 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Qualifications
Physical Effort and Work Conditions: Requires use of automated equipment such as optical readers and scanners (bar code wands) and computer keyboards to develop computerized inventory data, access materials, and fill item requisitions. Work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and similar activities in and around distribution areas on a concrete floor. Routinely lifts and carries items that weigh up to the maximum allowable weight for common carriers (UPS, FEDEX, US Postal Service, etc.) - normally up to 70 pounds. Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers, or by using pallet jacks or forklifts. Extended periods of intense concentration are required to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the work product. Routinely and independently lifts, moves, and carries loads weighing up to 70 pounds as required by UPS/FEDEX and DHL limits. The person in the position typically works indoors in an indoor environment involving everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms. Observance of normal safety practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations is required. The area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated.
Work is primarily in a light industrial warehouse environment involving everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. Work may require the wearing of protective clothing, such as steel-toed shoes, masks, gloves, etc. Regularly exposed to the possibility of minor cuts, scrape, bruises, and abrasions. Observance of normal safety practices with warehouse equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations are required. The area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. Requires assembly and disassembly of industrial steel shelving, furniture, and equipment as assigned.

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
