Summary About the Position: This position is located at Travis Air Force Base in California. This position is the Chief Medical Physicist, serving as a consultant and technical advisor for all aspects of the radiation safety and operations. The position will serve as the Radiation Safety Officer at Travis Air Force Base, while also supporting other regional Military Treatment Facilities. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation. Duties Develop technician quality control testing of radiation producing, detecting, and measuring equipment. Manage the Radiology Department equipment quality control program. Maintain system documentation to verify compliance with regulatory body requirements. Analyze systemic problems to develop written reports consistent with legal or professional requirements for dissemination through command channels. Develop procurement specifications and site planning for high-cost medical equipment purchases. Develop new quantitative image analysis techniques and procedures in electronic image acquisition. Oversee the radiation safety program. Requirements Conditions of employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. A Personnel Security Investigation is required. Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption. Travel Required: Up to 10% Business Travel required. A pre-placement medical examination is required. Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position. Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS. This position requires a flexible work schedule due to occasional after-hours equipment testing to restore clinical operations following unplanned outages Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Physicist (Diagnostic Radiology Medical): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physics, or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. The courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) providing guidance on the use of medical radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, 2) overseeing procedures for use of diagnostic radiology equipment, and 3) performing comprehensive quality control checks of diagnostic machines using professional guidelines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees. Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. Must be board certified in Diagnostic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology(ABR), meet Food and Drug Administration (FDA) medical physicist requirements for digital breast tomosynthesis, and meet 10 CFR 35.50 requirements for 10 CFR 35.100 and 35.200 uses ofradioactive material. Alternative comparable qualifications deemed acceptable by the DHA may be considered. Recruitment or relocation incentives MAY be authorized for highly qualified candidates. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Advanced leave accrual may be authorized.
