AI & Biology Research Engineer

STR is seeking an AI & Biology Research Engineer to help our team develop cutting-edge biotechnologies with significant and immediate impact on health R&D and national security. The AI & Biology Research Engineer can expect to rapidly develop and prototype software systems that enable biodata processing at scale; training and deployment of AI models and systems at scale; and discovery of innovative biotechnology solutions. The candidate should have versatile skills in machine learning and computer science, and be conversant in biology, to help us advance the state of the art.
The AI & Biology Research Engineer can expect to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams on cutting-edge problems in diagnostics, therapeutics, biomanufacturing, agriculture, and cyberbiosecurity. The candidate should ideally have experience working with large-scale data sets from any of the following domains: genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, or neurophysiology. Familiarity with concepts from molecular biology, genome engineering, protein design, or disease pathophysiology (in any system) would be viewed favorably.
What you will do:

• Working closely with a small, dedicated research team of scientists and engineers to develop innovative solutions to complex problems
• Designing and implementing large-scale data pipelines to optimize precision & recall, dependability, and processing speed
• Leading training, fine-tuning, and orchestration of AI systems, which may include a range of generative AI approaches
• Executing assigned tasks and reporting overall status to the project lead
• Developing novel software solutions that span research, development, and deployed production systems
• Identifying creative and promising algorithmic approaches to open-ended problems
• Delivering high-quality software in a team environment

Who you are:

• This position requires the ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by U.S. Government
• Proficient in Python
• Familiarity with modeling in PyTorch, Jax or equivalent framework
• Experience engineering data processing pipelines and models
• Self-starter with an ability to quickly pick up new tools and technologies
• Team player with strong communication skills
• MS or PhD, or 2+ years in industry, in a relevant field

Nice to Haves:

• Active Security Clearance
• Proficient in at least one of C/C++, Java, or Rust
• Experience building, deploying, and maintaining robust and stable software
• Experience with CI and unit test frameworks, such as Gitlab CI, Pytest, or XUnit based test frameworks
• Experience developing custom solutions for embedded systems
• Experience working with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
• Experience with cloud development and deployment (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
• Understanding of computer and operating system architecture, such as file systems, memory/process/thread management, device drivers and/or loadable kernel modules
