Job Summary: The Technical Designer Associate is an all-around designer who is responsible for designing and creating a variety of 2D and 3D projects. Technical designers are part programmer and part designer and are responsible for actually implementing the majority of the gameplay in projects. They are the middleman between the programming and design departments. Duties can include writing system specification documents, designing systems, writing scripts, mocking up user interfaces, menus, and gameplay examples. This position typically works under general supervision and direction.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop game content using C++ programming or Unity Visual scripting
- Work in a highly collaborative environment focusing on agile development and cross-discipline communication
- Create and maintain design and technical documentation for use throughout the entire production cycle
- Analyze, design, develop, document, implement, maintain, adapt, and modify assets and game engine scripts for a 3D immersive interactive training simulation application
- Participate as a key member of a co-located, multi-company, integrated team performing software development and Integrated Multi-Media Instruction (IMI) development tasks
- Work with artists, software engineers, and other content developers to ensure proper implementation according to system specifications
- Create and revise levels to meet design and functionality specifications and ensure a high level of optimization while delivering the highest level of fidelity
- Iterate on features and implementations for usability and runtime optimization
- Coordinate with artists, animators, sound engineers, and other game content developers to create and implement cut-scenes and in-game cinematics
- Agile-based planning and estimating for assigned tasks and objectives
- Analyze functional/performance specifications for products
- Help integrate and train for any new systems, tools, or processes
- Develop, implement, and manage game content within budget and achieve performance requirements
- Participate in peer reviews for correctness, adherence to the design concept and to user standards, and progress in accordance with schedules
- Work with Quality Assurance and System Tests to maintain standards and resolve issues that arise
- Identify and resolve technical issues during the development
- Participate in general content integration and work with other developers to optimize integration processes
- Coordinate with technical and instructional team members to resolve quality assurance issues
Minimum Job Requirements:
Two-year college degree (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Game Art, Game Design, Game Programming, or a similar area). Experience is required in two or more of the following areas: game programming, visual and traditional scripting (C++ or Blueprint/Kismet preferred in areas of AI, weapons, items, objects, particles, vehicles, scenario), level design, scenario creation, cinematics development, and Audio Simulation (aural environmental cueing). Unity experience is preferred but Unreal 4/5 gaming engines can be substituted. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required. Good interpersonal and team-oriented skills are required. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to quickly changing circumstances and work priorities in a timely manner are necessary. Familiarization with Agile or Iterative software development methods and work processes is desired. The ability to perform technical writing in order to describe software requirements including diagrams is desired. Experience with real-time simulation and/or military training applications is beneficial. Working knowledge of UML/OMT (Unified Modeling Language & Object Model Template) is beneficial. The ability to understand abstract concepts in order to apply solutions to real training needs and requirements. Position is for a Cleared location-Must be a US Citizen
