What we're looking for

This is a highly nimble role that involves being an advisor to the CEO on a range of strategic business matters requiring legal strategy and consideration. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with the CEO primarily in areas of strategic real estate partnerships, transactions, and as your role grows, across people operations, customer contract strategy, and fundraising. Our company is dynamic and growing fast. This role is intended for a curious individual excited by the exposure to high priority problems within a fast growing startup.

While this is a business role in its nature, a law degree and experience applying your law degree in a startup or other high growth environment is critical. You’ll work closely with the senior leadership team advising them on topics that cut across legal and business strategy. 

This position is ideal for someone who thrives on building relationships, negotiating deals, problem-solving, eager to learn and who is a stellar communicator. If you are successful, you have the opportunity to lead in a number of areas of the company.

This position is remote, with 10-15% of time for travel required.

Responsibilities

You will have the following responsibilities:

• Own relationships with our real estate partners, fostering rapport and continuously seeking opportunities for expansion, improvement, and long-term value creation.
• Efficiently manage and engage in a wide range of legal matters, including commercial agreements, entity formation and management, HR/employment, real estate, construction, dispute resolution, and daily reactive and proactive legal needs.
• Own relationships with outside counsel and engage as needed in the course of addressing legal matters at the company
• Perform due diligence in connection with real estate and corporate transactions.
• Advise and counsel various company teams, such as operations, finance, HR, real estate, construction, and IT/digital, on legal risks and negotiation strategy, answering questions and making recommendations for best practices and processes.
• Assist with management of the company’s real estate portfolio, addressing issues as they arise and drafting and negotiating applicable attendant documents such as SNDAs, guaranties, letters of credit, estoppel letters, and amendments.
• Counsel relevant Saltbox team members on key agreement terms, facilitate a smooth relationship between internal location teams and real estate partners

Requirements

To be considered for the position, you must have:

• 3-7 years of legal experience with a focus on transactions (real estate or corporate), of which at least two years must be as in-house counsel or transactional role in a startup or other dynamic environment
• Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations, with a strong attention to detail
• Holds a JD (required) and has been admitted to the bar, with a license to practice law in at least one US state.
• Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams.
• Ability to lead the entire deal negotiation process all the way through execution
• Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through, and meet deadlines.
• Growth-minded, collaborative, and able to work on a variety of legal matters outside of your immediate area of substantive expertise.
