Job Description

About Us

Sparrow is a modern, leave management HR software - the first end-to-end solution for all kinds of leaves. With incredible traction, thousands of leaves managed - we are positioned to be an industry leader. Our leave specialists are experts that care about helping employers and employees when they need it most. With negligible customer churn and an NPS score of 76, we know that our customers love us.

Our mission is to make it simple for companies to provide their employees with all kinds of leave (i.e. family, medical, etc.). Currently, the leave management process is painful and inefficient for everyone - company leaders struggle to keep up with regulations and processes that change frequently, and the employees going on leave are overwhelmed by bureaucracy at an exceptionally important juncture in their career. Sparrow transforms this ordinarily tedious, error-prone, complex to remain compliant, and time-consuming process into a 30-minute end-to-end experience saving teams time (20 - 40 hours per leave) and money (up to $30K per leave).

Sparrow is headquartered in San Francisco with remote employees across the country. Sparrow is a diverse, highly talented, and supportive team. Together, we are hardworking, collaborative, smart, and humble—after all, we’re solving real problems.

We’re building our Legal and Compliance team and looking for our first Compliance Analyst. As a founding member of the Legal & Compliance team and an important cross functional partner, you’ll focus on the analysis and research regarding leave of absence laws and related regulations at Sparrow. This role reports to Sparrow's General Counsel.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • You'll be responsible for researching and analyzing leave of absence laws and related regulations (e.g., paid family leave, paid sick leave, state disability,) as well as the agencies that administer programs pursuant to such regulations (e.g., California’s EDD).
  • Drafting policies and procedures based on new or updated leave laws for both internal and customer-facing use.
  • But you’re more than a research and policy wonk - you get to actually put your analysis into action!  You will be responsible for translating your research into the design of pragmatic, actionable, and  - most important of all - compliant processes.
  • In this regard, you will partner closely with Sparrow’s Customer Experience team to help build and refine compliant leave-related processes and workflows, including payroll planning, for an ever-growing number of jurisdictions within the United States, Canada, and beyond. You also will have the opportunity to partner with Engineering to guide product decisions that are compliant and exceed our customer expectations.

About You:

  • You are self-motivated and able to work autonomously but comfortable asking questions and speaking up when you’re blocked or need help.
  • You are curious and analytical; a creative researcher who is pleasantly persistent in trying to give shape to areas of complexity or ambiguity - or both!
  • You see problem solving as an opportunity not a challenge, and are proactive. You therefore actively engage in brainstorming and present options and ideas for discussion.
  • You are receptive to inquiries and feedback about your work. Similarly, you are a thoughtful communicator who appreciates that to explain something simply, you have to understand it deeply, and even then such explanations take practice because regulatory compliance is complex. You’re willing to practice because you have a growth mindset and want to keep learning and improving.
  • You value being part of a team and place a premium on the customer experience. As such, you approach internal collaboration with an open mind and a willingness to put yourself in other people’s shoes - including, especially, our end user’s.
  • You have the ability to influence others and motivate them to listen to you, even if you’re not the most senior person in the room (or Zoom).
  • You have experience with change management and fast-growth organizations that you can draw upon to help ensure Sparrow is building scalable practices.
  • Minimum of 4 years previous experience in a research and compliance role is required. Specialized knowledge regarding leaves of absence or related employment laws and regulations is not.
  • J.D. is a plus but not required.
