About The Role:

As a Data Systems Engineer at VentureWell you will design and build data infrastructure to ensure the integrity, alignment, and accessibility of information to our staff. We are looking for a colleague who enjoys learning about the goals of their colleagues and envisioning the upstream data structures to make that possible.

You excel at playing out technical scenarios, weighing risks & benefits of system changes and visualizing how data systems contribute to an organization’s success.

In this role you will: 

  • Identify, design and implement internal process improvements including:
    • Re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability and accessibility
    • Developing, maintaining, and identifying opportunities for new scalable data pipelines which support growing data volume and complexity as well as changing data needs
    • Automating manual processes to increase efficiency and reproducibility of workflows
  • Lead growth of organization’s data ecosystem through building new infrastructure
    • Aligning data across the organization using enterprise level design where appropriate
    • Monitor and analyze system performance to identify potential bottlenecks or inefficiencies
    • Implement performance optimizations to ensure data processing and storage remain efficient and reliable
  • Improve data access through organization
    • Assemble large, complex sets of data that meet programmatic, organization, and strategic business requirements
    • Design and create self-service data tools using advanced scripting (R, Python) to automate commonly used metrics and data visualizations 
    • Contribute to knowledge base to support users
  • Support the implementation of our data reproducibility vision
    • Ensure implementation of reproducibility standards in our data systems and products
    • Promote culture of data stewardship throughout the organization and offer guidance on best practices to end users
    • Design and implement data integration processes to consolidate disparate data sources across the organization
    • Develop and enforce data standardization and normalization processes to ensure consistency and accuracy in data assets
    • Consult on internal data initiatives to build reproducible practices into data products
  • Collaborate with our Information Systems team to assist in the implementation, and enforcement of policies that protect our systems and data
  • Creates and maintains high quality documentation on configurations and processes
  • Mentor other data systems team members in the areas of data reproducibility and engineering
    • Design trainings utilizing best practices in coding
    • Share knowledge of latest coding best practices
  • Work with stakeholders including the Executive, program delivery, business operations, and data systems teams to support their data infrastructure needs while assisting with data-related technical issues

What You Bring:

  • 5+ years related experience:
    • Designing and documenting relational database architecture
    • Building complex workflows using querying languages (SQL, SOQL, etc.)
    • Integrating 3rd party data using external APIs
    • Salesforce experience with a proven track record of creating and maintaining functional data architecture
    • Deploying architecture between production and sandbox environments
    • Authoring and maintaining codebases (R, Python)
      • Creating and maintaining internal packages and functions
      • Experience with CSS, HTML, and Javascript a plus 
    • Experience building ETLs against various sources
    • Translating the needs of non-technical staff into reproducible data products
  • Ability to learn new technologies and programming languages quickly
  • Familiarity with data security policies and best practices, as well as experience collaborating with Information Systems teams to ensure data protection
  • Experience in mentoring and providing training in areas of data engineering and best practices in coding
    • Experience promoting a data stewardship culture and implementing data reproducibility standards within an organization
  • Experience with Agile development methodology
  • Ability to communicate in technical and non-technical settings
  • Knowledge of and keeping current with best practices for data engineering and management

Our Benefits:

  • An attractive and equitable compensation package, including: 
    • a salary range of $100-120K commensurate with experience and internal equity
    • 403 (b) with 200% match up to a maximum contribution from VentureWell of 10% when the employee puts it 5% (eligible after one year of service for the match)
