Database Engineer

About The Role

As a Database Engineer you’ll ensure our Postgres and Snowflake database platforms are operating with high reliability and efficiency ensuring they are up and responsive during our peak business hours.  You’ll come up with key database metrics, tracking, and monitoring which will help gauge the health of the database and proactively alert if there are anomalies.  You’ll help tune the system for optimal performance and efficiency ensuring we have the scalability needed.  You’ll work on supporting the data engineering and BI team ensuring the data pipelines are working correctly and will develop and maintain frameworks to optimize the operational tasks of the data team.

What You'll Do

• Proactively and reactively take steps to continually tune the database instances for optimal health and performance.

• Assess the ongoing performance and usage of BI tools, analytical databases and tools

• Refactor existing frameworks to deliver data internally and externally to stakeholders

• Tune SQL statements, data model, and database instance configuration for optimal performance.

• Perform database instance upgrades

• Develop and maintain ETL transformation code

• Determine most applicable metrics to be captured which will help gauge database health and efficiencies.

• Keep up data security procedures and guidelines

• Work with databases based in various cloud providers.

What We Look For

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical field or equivalent work experience

• Deep understanding of how a relational database works with a preference given to Postgres, however open to knowledge of other platforms including MySQL, SQL Server and Oracle

• Skillfully run explain plan statements and know when indexes can help performance and the tradeoffs to adding indexes

• Understanding of database configuration parameters and how to change them to change the characteristics of the instance performance

• Excellent SQL experience with working through complex queries 

• Write and maintain scripts to automate metric gathering, anomaly detection and alerting.

• Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure and GCP

• Experience using cloud analytics platforms and BI tools

• Bonus to understanding of how replication works under the covers
