Electronic Sensors Design Engineer
Job Description
The Sensors Division at STR focuses on technology development for advanced sensor systems, particularly in the areas of airborne/surface-based radar, electronic warfare, underwater acoustics, and EO/IR applications. Within this role, we perform applied research centered on realizing prototype systems supported by experimental campaigns and technology development that is critical to addressing important challenges for the Department of Defense.
The Advanced Systems Development (ASD) Group within the Sensors Division researches and develops systems for wide-area long-range sensing of remote contested areas. Within this framework, ASD supports a broad portfolio of technologies that span from undersea to overhead domains. We are engaged in the development of new system concepts, implementation of advanced algorithms and processing, and the creation of novel new sensing spanning acoustic, RF, and optical domains. Our team brings expertise in ocean engineering, sensor design, acoustic materials, and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV's) design, and brings experience in modeling and simulation, experimental test and evaluation, and prototyping progressing from bench-top to operationally relevant environments.
Requirements
The ASD Group is seeking Sensor Engineers to support electronic system requirements development, design, fabrication, and test and evaluation for advanced sensor and electronic warfare applications. These prototype sensor systems will be used to demonstrate new capabilities and enable rapid transition to support our customer's needs.
A successful candidate will have demonstrated technical expertise in both the theory and practice in some of the following: electronics system requirements development, system design for analog RF frontends, noise/sensitivity performance modeling and simulation, systems engineering design and trade analysis, and test & evaluation for acceptance testing against performance metrics. Initial tasking will benefit from experience in novel HF signal processing and space-based systems that operate in challenging and noisy environments.
This position requires skills working as part of multi-disciplinary team designing, analyzing, and demonstrating advanced algorithms for complex systems. The role of a successful candidate will be tailored to fit within the existing team and leverage their strengths while enabling them to grow their career in both technical and leadership aspects.
Responsibilities:
- Develop system requirements, electronic designs, and engineering trade studies for novel sensors providing new capabilities in complex RF environments.
- Support system-level modeling and simulation activities of advanced RF systems
- Design requirements and test subsequent sensor prototypes against performance metrics
- Characterization of overall system noise performance from transducer through digitization
Requirements:
- US Citizenship with active Security Clearance, and eligible to support special access programs
- 5+ years experience in RF receiver design and evaluation
- Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python or other appropriate modeling and simulation tools
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills
Education:
- PhD, MS in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline with relevant industry experience
