General Summary of PositionThe Electro-Neurodiagnostic (END) Technologist II is a highly skilled and experienced technologist, who currently has at least two registrations/certifications within the END field. The END Technologist II will be responsible for electro-neurodiagnostic testing for all age groups, as ordered by physicians, according to established protocols and national ASET/ACNS guidelines. They are responsible for coordinating the day-to-day clinical operations to include resource allocation, assignment of technical staff, performing quality control data, and troubleshooting lab equipment. This position understands the clinical significance of testing performed. The END Technologist II provides support for the Chief Technologist, including participation in the education and training of END technicians/technologists, students, residents, and fellows. In addition, the END Technologist II provides management coverage when the Chief Technologist is unavailable. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Health's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Performs Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies, including long-term epilepsy monitoring, including ECS recordings, evoked potentials, cortical brain mapping, WADA, perioperative evoked potential monitoring and ambulatory EEG with special parameter monitoring, END for adult, pediatric, neonatal in/out patients and other special studies under the minimal supervision in the various labs of the department, on the nursing units and intraoperatively.
  • Functions as a work leader to assist in the workload distribution among area's work staff, suggesting technical innovations and plans work schedules which include assigning priorities according to load and clinical urgency.
  • Summarizes the patient's neurologic status and clinical history from the chart, patient or other knowledgeable person and explains the recording procedure to the patient and any family members present.
  • Adapts methods and instrumentation to obtain optimal results based on history, clinical observations and END findings.
  • Provides appropriate patient care and detailed observations of clinical manifestations during seizures and other emergency situations.
  • Ensures electrical safety of the patient at all times. Follows infection control and OSHA standards and guidelines.
  • Completes all necessary record keeping and storing of records or graphs.
  • Keeps equipment in clean operating condition, performs maintenance and minor repair of laboratory equipment and reports the need for major repairs.
  • Participates in conferences, technical meetings and other educational activities and serves as in service training instructor for END Technician, Technologist trainees and other medical personnel.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered as all-inclusive.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    • Associate's degree preferably in a science related field required
    • Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience

    Experience

    • 2 years working in a neurodiagnostic field required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Board registration in two of the following END fields: R.EEG T., R. NCV T., R. EMG T., CLTM required
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Current knowledge of basic EEG, evoked-potentials, and nerve conduction studies. Must be able to follow detailed instructions on all procedures. Able to establish good rapport with patients, public and the staff. Able to work with severely ill patients. Has sound independent judgement and initiative.
