Engineering Leader, Customer Engineering
Job Description
Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.
Benchling’s mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world’s most innovative biotech companies use Benchling’s R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market.Â
Come help us bring modern software to modern science.
ROLE OVERVIEW
As a manager on the Customer Engineering team, you will lead the development of solutions critical for the success of our rapidly growing customer base. A great leader for this team will understand how to balance complex customer needs and business priorities, collaborate across Engineering, Product and Customer Experience to ensure quality delivery, and influence future roadmap based on observations of what it’s like to build on the Benchling platform today. See an example of a recent project on our website that describes how the CE team automated DNA assembly to improve efficiency and reduce cost.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build and manage a team of full-stack engineers who develop product integrations and platform extensions to enable complex scientific workflows.
- Collaborate closely with customer-facing teams (i.e. sales, solutions consulting) to set expectations with customers on scope and timelines.
- Guide a wide range of internal and external stakeholders through the design, implementation and deployment process.
- Interface directly with customers as needed to analyze requirements, communicate status, and ensure projects are set up for success.
- Encourage and facilitate continuous improvement of the team’s tools and processes.
- Strengthen Benchling’s APIs and improve the developer experience by distilling and communicating learnings from building on the platform to the rest of the Engineering team.
- Scale capacity to meet customer demand by leveraging third-party staff augmentation.
- Make Benchling a great place to work by actively supporting career development and fostering an inclusive atmosphere.
Here are some other examples of Customer Engineering projects:
- Tools to assist with DNA assembly - scientists need to plan which DNA entities should be combined to express a particular protein. They want to automate searching for the possible components of this assembly given desired ratios and what materials are available in inventory.
- Chemistry tools - Benchling has focused primarily on biology and biotech for the last 5 years, but we are just starting new initiatives to expand our tools to support chemists as well. This involves integrating with external chemistry tools, and is an opportunity to serve a new type of customer and scientific use case.
- Hardware integration - scientists are increasingly using automation in the lab to perform measurements and manage samples. By integrating Benchling with automated freezers, we are working towards a world where a scientist can perform a physical experiment entirely using software.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with customers in an enterprise context (e.g. triaging incoming requests from customers, managing customer-facing timelines and deliverables).
- Willingness to work onsite in our Boston office 3 days a week.
- A track record of growing high-trajectory, early-to-mid-career engineers into leaders with company-wide impact.
- Familiarity with running & supporting infrastructure, ideally using AWS.
- Experience leading teams that are geographically distributed and consist of a mixture of employees and contractors.
- Strong writing and communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Curiosity about life sciences!
