The Opportunity

This position works out of the Bay Area (Santa Clara, Pleasanton, Alameda) or Sylmar, California location in the Medical Devices Digital Solutions organization. Abbott Medical Devices, with revenue of >$14B in 2021, is a global leader in providing life changing technology for the management and treatment of people living with chronic conditions including Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Chronic Pain, and Movement Disorders.

The Head of Software, Digital Solutions reports to the Divisional Vice President of Digital Solutions. This critical role steers all aspects of the Digital Solutions' technical elements. This includes defining scalable, trusted, and extensible architecture, providing oversight for design, development and evolution of solutions, and establishing processes and tools to realize the strategy efficiently. This position provides management input into the development and execution of strategic plans to create customer focused digital products and services. The Head of Software will work closely with the cross-functional team, support functions, and Medical Devices divisions to establish and achieve goals while ensuring compatibility with all systems involved.

What You'll Work On

• Steer all technical elements within the Digital Solutions organization.
• Define, develop, and guide all internal and external technical teams.
• Provide an integrated technology vision that supports strategy planning.
• Actively monitor technology trends and competitive dynamics while integrating and adapting internal plans accordingly.
• Identifies, evaluates, and provides technical expertise for potential business partners, including physicians, vendors, and contract product development.
• Provide direction to design and development teams to keep focus and deliver on commitments.
• Provide design and development teams with appropriate resources to perform assigned tasks in an efficient manner.
• Formulate and implement programs, policies, tools, and procedures required to support technical needs.
• Develop, maintain, and ensure reliability of current and future products and services.
• Interfaces with appropriate internal and external resources (regulatory, customers, etc.) to ensure development programs meet regulatory, compliance, legal and customer requirements.
• Guides development and documentation of requirements, test plan protocols, standard operating procedures, specifications, and test procedures.
• Keeps senior management team informed of design and development progress and issues.
• Ensures intellectual property is appropriately protected.
• Develops and manages departmental budgets. Obtains capital resources to meet company goals.
• Complies with government regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.

Critical Success Indicators:

• Successfully built and commercialized multiple digital products and services from concept thru launch using agile processes in both consumer tech and med tech.
• Successfully defined a scalable and extensible technical strategy with clear delineation between internal and external contributions.
• Demonstrated experience in creating products that seamlessly fit into customer and patient desired workflows.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field
• Minimum 15 years of experience in developing and commercializing software products and services
• Experience developing and launching digital health products and services in consumer tech or med tech that delight the customer
• Experience influencing across a complex set of stakeholders in a large, decentralized organization
• Ability to work across functions and within function to provide technical guidance, manage change, and foster an agile culture of developing quality products at scale
• Excellent communication skills and ability to inspire others (oral / written / presentations)
• Service-oriented mindset supported by high degree of emotional intelligence when interacting with peers, subordinates, management, vendors, partners, and colleagues
• Ability to anticipate industry trends and build organization capabilities to support the evolving needs
• Ability to define and maintain a scalable agile development process and framework for developing high quality products on reliable timelines
• Ability to develop, train, and mentor technical talent in a continuously evolving technology space
• Broad technical depth in a wide range of software technologies (mobile, cloud, desktop, services, advanced analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence)
• Relentless focus on and passion for product quality and technical excellence
• Master at explaining deep technical concepts to non-technical audiences at any level paired with ability to create architecture documentation for both executives and development staff
• Ability to identify innovative digital capabilities and apply them to commercial needs to support our digital product and services pipeline
• Interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile interdisciplinary conflicts while optimizing overall functional goals
• Ability to minimize schedule and technical risk by foreseeing and addressing obstacles proactively and aggressively
• Ensures the cross-functional team is making good decisions regarding design, development, quality, costs, security, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, and strategic fit within the patent portfolio

Preferred Qualifications

• MS and/or PhD degree in computer science or software engineering related field
• Experience creating commercial products in a highly regulated industry
• Familiarity with the clinical setting and integrated set of needs by health care professionals, health care systems, and patients
• Minimum 5 years of technical organization management experience and a proven ability to collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, and team members to deliver high quality products on time in a dynamic, regulated environment.
