About the Role:
The Hydraulics Engineer is responsible for providing strategic direction and advanced technical expertise in pipeline hydraulics across pipeline and facility operations. This role supports system optimization, troubleshooting, and the development and execution of initiatives that enhance process safety and reliability. The position plays a key part in meeting departmental objectives while ensuring alignment with engineering best practices and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct hydraulic studies using modeling software to assess pipeline system performance, identify design or maintenance issues, and develop actionable technical recommendations.
- Provide engineering support for operations by troubleshooting hydraulics-related challenges within assigned asset areas.
- Review and guide the development of transient and steady‑state hydraulic models, ensuring technical accuracy and quality.
- Perform technical reviews throughout the project lifecycle, contributing expertise during stage‑gating and design assurance processes.
- Execute and/or review feasibility studies, conceptual and detailed engineering designs to ensure compliance with company standards, quality processes, and regulatory requirements.
- Support project execution teams by providing engineering input that ensures technical requirements are met and optimized.
- Participate in scope development for pipeline and facility projects.
- Contribute to Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) reviews as required.
- Recommend improvements to engineering standards, specifications, and design processes.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of hydraulics engineering advancements and pipeline system technologies.
- Ensure proficiency with internal and industry‑recognized hydraulic engineering tools.
- Serve as a key liaison with multidisciplinary teams to support engineering initiatives and ensure consistent communication across stakeholders.
- Lead meetings, technical discussions, and correspondence with internal teams and external partners.
- Prepare clear documentation outlining design assumptions, parameters, findings, and recommended actions.
- Provide guidance to project teams to ensure cost‑effective designs and operational reliability.
- Mentor and support the development of less experienced engineers.
- Represent the department in technical reviews and contribute to cost‑reduction and performance‑improvement initiatives.
Scope & Dimensions:
- Focuses on resolving complex technical issues within assigned operational areas.
- Provides specialized expertise and makes decisions with minimal technical oversight.
- Engages in design, operability, constructability, and system performance evaluations.
- Acts as a subject matter contributor on internal reviews and strategic discussions.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum 7 years of progressively advanced hydraulics engineering experience within the oil & gas industry.
- Demonstrated senior‑level experience in hydraulic design and pipeline engineering.
- Detailed hands‑on expertise with hydraulic modeling software, particularly Synergi Pipeline Simulator (SPS).
- Strong understanding of liquid pipeline and facility operations.
- Eligible for registration as a P.Eng. in Alberta.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
- Strong ability to manage multiple priorities and shift effectively between planned and unplanned activities.
- Well‑developed analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies, including PHA, HAZOP, and LOPA.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily office‑based, with occasional travel to construction or operational sites within Canada or the United States.
