The Opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated Intermediate Software Engineer- Automation for the Private Cloud Services team within the Core Infrastructure Services group. As a trusted partner working in Private Cloud Services, you will be pushing the organization forward while helping to solve difficult technology problems. The Automation Engineer supports the system infrastructure life cycle in a multi-platform environment by implementing and maintaining an efficient and secure enterprise infrastructure pipeline that offers uninterrupted service for our customers. The Automation Engineer provides a holistic skill that addresses the development of required Cloud patterns and Software Defined Infrastructure services for a broad range of solutions to including compute, storage, databases, networking, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and security.
The Automation Engineer must be willing to continue to master one major technology domain in infrastructure or operations, yet also be able to apply your engineering skills to develop infrastructure and operations solutions based on customer preference defined through each customer engagement. This position is expected to have subject matter knowledge of core software engineering areas with a firm grasp of Agile, DevOps, and various pipeline methodologies and technologies.
This position is a hybrid work type and is based out of San Antonio, TX; Plano, TX; Charlotte, NC; Tampa, FL or Phoenix, AZ. Hybrid roles help employees gain the best of both worlds - collaborating in-person in the office and working from home when needed to achieve focused results.
Within defined guidelines and framework, provides support to the Enterprise through delivering best in class technology solutions. Engaged in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle which include gathering and analyzing requirements, designing, testing, documenting, and implementing software, responding to outages.
What you'll do:
- Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
- Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.
- Design, develop, code, and test technical solutions
- Write code to deliver features, and improvements, on a regular basis
- Investigates and resolve technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques
- Continually improves operations by conducting systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.
- Prepares and installs solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.
- Follows the software development lifecycle.
What you have:
- Bachelor's Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree OR Approved certification from CodeUp, Galvanize, VetFIT (Veterans for IT) or eFIT (Employees for IT).
- 2 years of software development experience specific to a discipline/technology.
- 1 year of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.
- Basic Understanding of one or more of the following: Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL
- Knowledge and understanding of troubleshooting applications and systems within production issues.
- Ability to quickly understand applicable business acumen to provide appropriate Engineering solutions
- Ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions
What sets you apart:
- Moderate Experience or knowledge in GoLang, Python, Java.
- Significant experience in scripting leveraging Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
- Moderate experience or knowledge of Git, GitHub or semantic versioning strategies and artifact management using Jfrog Artifactory.
- Moderate experience or knowledge with a growing maturity with automation tools like GitLab and Jenkins Pipelines, Hashicorp Terraform and stack, Ansible, Puppet, qTest and/or any of the many other technologies that help build a staged deployment pipeline for teams to reach a more continuous capability.
- Moderate experience or knowledge in Infrastructure Elasticity (IaC, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, etc.)
- Absolutely must be a self-starter with a high degree of experimentation through exploration who enjoys working on an empowered team.
- Takes the initiative to break current solutions down so they can be built back up better than they were before.

What we offer:
Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $71,490- $136,690
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
