Summary
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This a Maintenance Worker position that performs a variety of welding, carpentry and equipment operation tasks at Fort Johnson, LA.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This is a non-sensitive position requiring a T-1 (NACI) investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position is covered by Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, condition of employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
- Must be able to obtain and possess driver's license to operate motor vehicles and engineering equipment. Incumbent may be required to carry passengers.
- Rotating shift work may be required.
- Incumbent must successfully pass a pre-employment and annual physical.
- This position requires the use of safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and/or protective clothing.
- This position requires business travel/TDY 5% of the time.
- This is a "Mission Essential” position. Incumbents are not subject to administrative dismissal in emergencies created by inclement weather conditions or emergency situations as appropriate.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 95 lbs. with the help of others and or / equipment, in the regular performance of duties.
Qualifications
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Worker (MVO) without more than normal supervision. Applicants should document experience in work that involves applying a variety of electric resistance welding methods and equipment, or one or more manual welding processes, to carry out standard welding operations; assisting in the check out, troubleshoot and repair of electronic targets, tower controller operating computers and electronic equipment related to range maintenance; repairing wooden and metal structures such as warehouses, storage sheds, range target houses, control towers, latrine buildings, maintenance sheds, related range facilities, etc.; AND operating motor vehicle and engineering equipment. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
- Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal Supervision
- PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee is regularly required to lift and carry target mechanism weighing up to 95 pounds with the help of other workers and/or equipment. The work also requires frequent bending, stooping, and working in cramped or awkward areas.
- WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in and out of doors in all types of weather conditions. There is frequent requirement for standing on concrete floors and working on remote ranges and rough terrain. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, abrasions, burns, and electrical shocks. While operating a motor vehicle, there is danger of accidents and severe injury. Work will be in the shop, small arms impact areas or potential areas. Duties involve working with or in close proximity to explosive or incendiary material in an environment where there is close proximity to unexploded ordnance. The work involves frequent exposure to foul weather conditions.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
