About the role:
We are looking for a Manager to lead our Data Engineering team under the Marketing organization. This team builds and scales the data infrastructure that powers our broader sales and marketing initiatives. As a team, we are uniquely positioned between Sales, Marketing, Product and Finance and incorporate data from over 50+ sources into our centralized data infrastructure. You will partner with these organizations and guide an experienced team of data engineers to continue to scale the reliability, latency, monitoring, security and accessibility of our data infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will have strong data infrastructure and data architecture skills, a proven track record of supervising and scaling data engineering teams, strong operational and project management skills to drive execution, strong leadership, and a strong vision for how we can proactively leverage our data in Sales and Marketing.Â

In this role, you will:Â- Proactively drive the vision for our central Sales and Marketing data infrastructure and execute on a plan to achieve that vision
- Provide effective leadership to the data engineering team, set clear objectives, prioritize effectively and define individual roles and responsibilities within the team.Â
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promote professional growth, and provide guidance and support to team members
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand project requirements and priorities. Plan data engineering projects, set timelines, and allocate resources effectively to ensure successful execution
- Monitor the performance of data pipelines and infrastructure, identifying bottlenecks and areas for improvement. Implement optimizations to enhance the overall efficiency and reliability of data processing.
- Offer technical expertise and guidance to team members, assisting them with problem-solving and making architectural judgements for data pipelines and infrastructure
- Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines and ETL processes to ensure the efficient and reliable movement of data from various sources to the data warehouse or other target systems
- Manage and optimize the data infrastructure, which may involve working with cloud-based platforms, data warehouses, data lakes, and other distributed systems.
- Stay informed about the latest advancements in data engineering technologies and best practices. Encourage a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the team
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices
- Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team
Minimum requirements for the role:
- 6+ years of experience across Data Engineering, Data Warehousing, Software Engineering and 2+ years managing a technical team in a supervisory capacity
- BS in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Information Systems, Informatics, Analytics or equivalent working experience required
- Strong project management skills and team management experience
- Ability to set clear goals, motivate the team, provide guidance, and foster a collaborative work environment
- Experience managing engineers and guiding them through project planning, design, development, and quality control
- Sound knowledge of building data pipelines, datasets, and data architecture from raw and unstructured data
- Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with a variety of relational databases, query languages, query authoring, and related tools
- Hands-on experience in building data pipelines, platforms, architecture, structures, visualizations, and data modeling
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills
An ideal candidate also has:
- 6+ years of experience with very large scale data platform projects
- Experience working with APIs to collect or ingest data.
- Strong Database knowledge of Data Warehouse technologies
- Demonstrated academic or professional statistics and math skills
- Write complex SQL for processing raw data, data validation and QA
