The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Public Affairs Manager to support public relations and corporate communications for Abbott's Vascular and Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) businesses, two important divisions within of our Medical Devices business focusing on cardiovascular solutions. This position will report to the Director of Business Public Affairs overseeing Public Affairs for both the Vascular and CRM businesses.

What You'll Work On

Primary Job Function

The Public Affairs function within Abbott has global responsibility for all public affairs/public relations activities, with this position's specific emphasis being the Vascular business unit, headquartered in Santa Clara, California and the CRM business headquartered in Sylmar, California.

This role is responsible for supporting the two businesses and executing communications programs and strategies that build the brand and protect Abbott's reputation among employees, health care professionals, investors and consumers. The Manager must be able to think strategically and provide thoughtful counsel to a broad range of internal and external contacts across varying levels of management. Success in the role means being very comfortable with a fast pace and ability to juggle multiple projects while bringing people skills and creativity to the role.

Position Accountability / Scope

The Public Affairs Manager supports Abbott's Vascular and CRM businesses while reporting directly to the Director of Public Affairs. All divisional Business Public Affairs functions report into Abbott's broader Corporate Public Affairs department, based in Chicago, Ill. where Abbott is headquartered. This position works with a broad range of internal and external constituencies across all levels of management and functions at both the corporate and division level, including Marketing, Sales, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Operations, Quality, HR, Government Affairs, Investor Relations, Legal and Finance.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the efforts of providing strategic counsel to the marketing teams, internal/external clients, and country-level leadership on business-related initiatives.
  • Develop external public relations strategies for identified global product launches/filings, clinical data presentations at major medical meetings, product awareness programs/outreach, and disease-state awareness efforts.
  • Assist the team in developing plans that support the communication needs and product promotion activities of country managers and affiliates around the world. Partner with PR agency staff to execute on campaigns.
  • Foster and leverage relationships with national consumer, finance and trade media to enhance and protect the company's reputation and advance business objectives. Proactively pitch stories to increase Abbott's share of voice.
  • Work with sales and field clinical teams to build relationships with KOLs to support media and public relations objectives and identify strong patient stories that showcase our therapies that can be shared with the media or highlighted on Abbott social/digital channels.
  • Partner with advocacy groups to expand Abbott's presence among key physician and patient groups.
  • Partner with Abbott's Corporate Public Affairs and Content teams to infuse corporate owned and social channels with content from the business unit.
  • Assist with executive communications strategy and development of employee communications materials.
  • Support the team with issues management as needed to help minimize reputation/business impact and influence business decision making process.
  • Develop multimedia and digital strategies to complement key Public Affairs campaigns.
  • Help measure and communicative effectiveness of internal and external communication efforts to business and corporate stakeholders.
  • Update press materials and other communications tools as needed.
  • Have the ability to travel as needed.
  • Assist in building and supporting strategic communications and competitive positioning for brand and/or company, with particular emphasis on competitive environment and marketplace.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • A bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, business, marketing or related field is required.

Minimum Experience / Training Required

  • At least 6 years of experience in public relations, with 3-4 years in a high-level communications environment within a corporate environment or public relations agency preferred.
  • Experience in health care and/or a regulated and global environment is preferred, but not required.
  • Able to achieve results within a rapidly changing, fluid and highly matrixed environment.
  • Candidates must have a track record of excellent professional writing, communication, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Experience working with and counseling senior management is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience developing and implementing media relations plans and proven ability in placing media stories and managing relationships with national/international contacts.
  • Experience assisting or leading digital and social media projects required.
