Mechanical Estimator – Insulation Focus - Full Time
MacKinnon & Olding has an immediate need for a Mechanical Estimator with an Insulation focus to support our insulation operations in Nova Scotia. This position will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates, developing take-offs, reviewing specifications/drawings, and supporting proposal submissions. This position works closely with operations, project management, procurement, and clients.
We welcome candidates with broader mechanical estimating experience (piping, HVAC, fabrication, or related industrial scopes).
RESPONSIBILITIES: What you will do
- Prepare detailed estimates for mechanical insulation scopes (pipe, equipment, duct, tanks, vessels, etc.)
- Perform quantity take-offs from drawings/specs and develop labor/material pricing
- Review RFQ's, specifications, and technical requirements; identify risks, assumptions, and clarifications
- Source pricing from suppliers/subtrades; prepare bid packages and scope comparisons
- Build and maintain estimate backups (take-offs, calculations, vendor quotes, clarifications)
- Support proposal submissions, revisions, and post-bid handoffs to operations
- Participate in job kickoffs and change management support (as needed)
QUALIFICATIONS: Your background
- Experience estimating mechanical insulation work or related mechanical scopes (piping, HVAC, fabrication, industrial trades, etc.)
- Experience developing detailed bid packages for industrial projects
- Understanding of insulation systems, materials, and installation methods
- Ability to interpret drawings/specifications and produce accurate take-offs
- Proficiency with Excel and estimating tools (Bluebeam/On-Screen Takeoff or similar is an asset)
- Strong communication skills; comfortable coordinating with internal teams and vendors
- Valid drivers license (and ability to travel to sites as required)
