Job Description

General Summary of PositionMonitors patients on the telemetry consoles.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Documents rhythm every two hours on EKG flow sheet. Immediately reports any change in cardiac rhythm to the nurse. Obtains strips of irregularities.
  • Maintains charge requisitions on monitored patients. Makes nursing personnel aware of need for replacement of patient electrodes and/or newly monitored patients to be connected.
  • Maintains safe and effective operation of the Monitoring Console at all times. Ensures that paper loaders are full.
  • Monitors assigned telemetry console. Obtains monitor strips at the start of each shift, interprets strip, puts date and time on each strip, and places it on flow sheet.
  • Provides a verbal report to relief persons and gives a patient report to oncoming technicians.
  • Verifies and adjusts alarm limits as established for the levels appropriate to the individual patient. Verifies alarms are on at all times.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Answers and makes telephone calls, responds to intercom/patient call bells and email, identifies emergency messages
  • Maintains inventory of office supplies. Reports unit equipment that is malfunctioning or defective to appropriate personnel.
  • Stops any secretarial duties and responds to all lethal dysrhythmias SVT (sustained), Ventricular tachycardia (VT), Ventricular fibrillation (VF), and Asystole, notifies appropriate RN and documents in monitor tech log.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required or
    • equivalent. required

    Experience

    • Less than 1 year 6 months experience with emergency situations and maintaining continuous strips of cardiac rhythms required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Completion of the Monitor Technician Program. required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.
