News Editor, Newsdesk

The big picture: Axios is a growth-stage company dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We're hiring a talented, web-first editor to join our Newsdesk team to steer daily coverage on axios.com and occasionally edit our flagship newsletters. 

• Hours for this role will be afternoons and evenings, eastern time. All editors on the team also contribute to cover occasional shifts for weekends, absences, vacations, etc. 

Why it matters: Our Newsdesk team is central to how we bring our audience-first journalism to axios.com, our apps, and distributed platforms, especially reaching new readers who may be new to Axios and Smart Brevity. Editors on the team collaborate with nearly all parts of the Axios newsroom. 

Between the lines: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for Axios’ mission and have most of the following skills: 

• Experience leading a breaking news desk, identifying and assigning general assignment stories and ensuring quality reporting and editing
• Experience identifying the most urgent news as it emerges, moving quickly to turn around coverage while coordinating across desks
• Familiarity with the competitive breaking news space nationally, including experience writing sharp headlines built for social media and SEO
• Experience with alerting news for app, email and social audiences
• Proven attention to detail on fact-checking and copy editing
• Positive attitude and ability to thrive in fast-twitch, high-pressure news environments
• Comfort with newsgathering and storytelling tools and real-time analytics
• Willingness to work occasional odd-hours or weekend shifts as dictated by the news environment and to help cover for coworker time off
• Exceptional verbal communication and collaboration skills, especially in a remote-centric environment
