Major Responsibilities:
  • Collection of patient specimens to maintain high quality patient care.
    • 1)Performs routine and specialized phlebotomy (e.g. venipunctures, heel sticks, finger sticks, throat and nasal swabs), procedures regarding patient comfort and safety as well as specimen integrity, type and amount.
    • 2)Determines proper phlebotomy technique based on patient age, medical status and physician's test request.
    • 3)Assures validity of specimens by confirming patient identification and methodology for the type of specific testing.
    • 4)Responsible for ensuring patient identification throughout the specimen collection process (from test ordering, specimen collection, specimen labeling and processing)
    • 5)Assures specimen quality by ensuring that specimen type collected is appropriate for physician's test request.
    • 6)Distributes specimens to appropriate processing area on a timely basis.
    • 7)Follows all departmental and infection control guidelines in handling biohazardous material. These guidelines are established through standards set by OSHA and CDC.
    • 8)Interacts with patients, patient families, physicians and nursing staff utilizing positive customer focused behaviors.
    • 9)Performs in-house testing and quality control for CLIA wavied testing.
  • Clinical Support/Health Outcomes: Provide support in the delivery of quality clinical care
    • 7)Accurately maintains the test tracking log and communicates to the physician any delays in obtaining results. The medical assistant will assist in the communication of test results by following appropriate policy and procedure for the site.
    • 8)Communicates with pharmacies to refill medications per site protocol
    • 1)Handles patient flow, including preparing of rooms and patients and other duties as assigned by the Advocate Medical Group physician office standards.
    • 2)Performs various tests/procedures and medication administration independently in accordance with certification, scope of care and Advocate/AMG policies and procedures.
    • 3)Provides patient education and discharge instructions
    • 9)Communicates with other physicians or other providers/ancillary staff to ensure continuity of care. Participates in "mock code" drills. Knows where emergency equipment is located and makes it available to the provider. During the visit measures and records accurately: blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight; records reason for visit as appropriate; documents adminstration of any medications/immunizations and all procedures and obtains consent if applicable. Documents according to policy and procedure in medical record all patient communications. Takes and active role in achieving AMG clinical integration goals by medical record preparation, i.e. assures appropriate flow sheets and charts are available and completed at the time of the patient visit. Accurate data is obtained and documented. Assists the physician in maintaining registries. Communicates to the physician any outstanding data, tests or measures required for clinical integration.
    • 4)Assists patietns in obtaining additional services ordered by the physician prior to leaving the office as part of discharge planning and in setting up referrals for additional care.
    • 5)Anticipates the need for and completes all documentation necessary to ensure quality care based on policy and procedure, including vital signs, immunizations/medications, history, procedures and messages.
    • 6)Accurately performs and maintains practice site quality control logs in accordance with standards for maintaining CLIA certification.
  • Reviews laboratory requisitions and specimens to ensure quality patient care.
    • 2)Reviews specimens received from non- laboratory collection sites for accurate specimen type, suitable collection handling and adequate specimen amount.
    • 3)Completes patient check- in to ensure correct test code entry according to established policies and procedures.
    • 4)Handles phone inquires for information regarding physicians orders and specimen type in an accurate, timely and customer focused manner.
    • 1)Receives pathology and other specimens from clinical areas, accountable for hand off to the reference laboratory for accuracy of patient identification and clarity.
  • Timely distribution of patient results to maintain quality patient care.
    • 1)Maintains required departmental files.
    • 2)Prints and distributes patient reports, when applicable.
    • 3)Handles phone inquires and fax requests in an accurate, timely and customer focused manner.
  • Referral Laboratory Services.
    • 1)Prepares specimens for transport to appropriate off- site testing facilities in an accurate, efficient and cost-effective manner to ensure customer satisfaction in turnaround times.
    • 2)Responds using customer -focused behaviors to inquiries regarding specimen type and turnaround times.
    • 3)Ensures availability of adequate supplies.
  • Maintains a minimum level of competency on policies and procedures.
    • 1)Assists in the orientation of new personnel in departmental policies and procedures or basic phlebotomy techniques to assure quality patient care.
    • 2)Participates in departmental in-services and maintains skills and knowledge at required competency levels.
    • 3)Maintains a level of continuing education to assure competency and makes recommendations for process improvement. Maintains certifications required for MA and phlebotomist roles.
  • Depending on work assignment or time scheduled to work; an individual may be assigned to one of the following additional tasks or job responsibilities.
    • 1)Performs other duties such as outstanding order reports or duties within the scope of education and training.
    • 2)Assist in answering phones and scheduling appointments for the department.

Education/Experience Required:
  • High school diploma 1-year phlebotomy experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Knowledge of basic phlebotomy technique and use of vacutainers, needles and syringes. Basic familiarity with CRTs and keyboards
  • Eligible for certification for PBT (ASCP). CPR certification Medical Assistant certification/registration within one year of hire

Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Some instrumentation and work counters are higher than table height. May be exposed to potentially toxic chemicals. High stress fast paced work environment. Routinely works with biohazardous specimens and infectious agents. Ability to recognize needs and behaviors of patients treated (i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging). Prior experience with various age groups is required. Must be able to work weekends as scheduled. Must he able to work overtime when required.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
