The position of Principal Database Engineer is within our Infectious Disease Developed Markets business unit located at the Towne Centre site in San Diego, California. This role requires extensive hands-on, database design and coding experience, developing modern data platform and associated code utilizing Cloud native database technologies. This role will be responsible for supporting database solutions for both on market projects and new platform development. This includes handling field investigations related to data integrity/discrepancy. This position will also participate in new platform development responsible for database design and implementation.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design and implement conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support business needs on Cloud-based systems.
- Propose, design and implement cost effective solution for data migration to consolidate multiple dispersed databases into common database engine. (Consolidate Mango DB, PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB and Azure SQL Database).
- Build and maintain efficient data pipeline architecture, ingress / egress data pipelines for applications, utilizing Azure Data Factory.
- Experience with multi-tenancy database design.
- Experience with database sharding strategies.
- Develop and document the data movement standards, best practices, and promote them across department.
- Conduct code and design reviews to ensure data related standards and best practices are met.
- Proactively educate others on modern data engineering concepts and design
- Guide and support junior colleagues to develop their skills.
- Work in the team following Agile - Scrum practices.
- Take responsibilities of internal activities outside of the project.
- Ability to work with geographically dispersed teams.
- Evaluate current development processes and provide recommendations for improvements.
- Understands and is aware of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of the products.
- Identify key barriers/core problems and apply problem-solving skills in order to deal creatively with complex situations. Troubleshoot and resolve complex problems, and make decisions under conditions of uncertainty, sometimes with incomplete information, that produce effective end results.
- Use strong technical abilities and able to suggest multiple solutions to problems.
- Provide estimates for the development related efforts in systematic and time sensitive way.
- Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies.
- Other duties as assigned, according to the changing needs of the business.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING
Required:
- 10+ years of experience in software development involving database design.
- Bachelor of Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience (MS preferred).
Preferred:
- Experience in delivering products for the Medical Device industry.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB, Mongo DB and Snowflake.
- Developing using Python and SQL.
- Experience with RDBMS and NoSQL
- Candidate MUST have hands on experience crafting and implementing data pipelines across large scale systems.
- Experience implementing data pipelines with Azure is a must.
- Production delivery experience in Cloud based PaaS related technologies (Azure SQL Database. Cosmos DB, PostgreSQL)
- Experienced in multiple Cloud PaaS persistence technologies, and in-depth knowledge of cloud based ETL offerings and orchestration technologies.
- Experience with OLTP and OLAP.
- Experienced in stream-based and batch processing applying modern technologies.
- Database design skills including normalization/de-normalization and data warehouse design.
- Experience in Disaster Recovery procedures and geo-redundant strategies.
- Strong analytical / Debugging / Troubleshooting skills
- Understanding of Distributed File Systems (Azure Blob Storage, HDFS)
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant legal and regulatory requirements, such as SOX, PCI, HIPAA, Data Protection
- Strong Programming Experience - Python / SQL etc.
- Experience in the healthcare industry, a plus

The salary for this role is between:
$104,300 - $208,500
