The Data Services team sits within the Engineering - Curation department as a whole and is responsible for provisioning all the data ingested from the medical registries and database optimization. There are 5 teams within Engineering - Curation: Platform, Machine Learning, Data Services, Data Management, and Data Integrity.The Data Services team is looking for a Principal Engineer who will design and develop common services for Data Infrastructure as a Platform.You will work in a fast-paced environment where you will get an opportunity to build and contribute to the full lifecycle development and maintenance of the data engineering solutions at Verana Health.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Principal Engineer leads the development and execution of multiple data pipelines to organize, collect, and standardize data to power analytics and end user applications.
  • Understands the business context and transfer those requirements to solution design with a focus on the flexibility, scalability, and reliability of underlying architecture.
  • Deep understanding of various database technologies. Such as: Relational (Postgres, MySql, RedShift) , NoSQL ( Elasticsearch, DynamoDB), InMemory DB.
  • The Principal Engineer implements POCs, code review, documentation, and provides technical guidance to the team.
  • Analyze the systems and requirements to provide the technical solutions and explore ways to enhance data quality and reliability.
  • Design and develop ETL (Extract / Transform / Load) processes, database based on use cases
  • Experiments with available tools and advice on new tools in order to determine optimal solution given the requirements dictated by the product /use case.
  • Drive data access methods & architect data services to improve the overall efficiency of data availability & accessibility for analytics.

Basic Requirements:

  • BS/MS in Computer Science or a degree in a information technology.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience with a Cloud provider (preferably AWS Airflow, AWS Glue, Lambda and step functions).
  • Excellent solution design skills with expertise in big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Presto, Hive etc.
  • Expert in Pyspark and orchestration via Airflow.
  • Strong coding skills in Python/Java or equivalent.
  • Good knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
  • Solid understanding of engineering and data platform best practices.
  • Understanding of scalability and reliability concerns for data-intensive applications.
  • Innovative: can connect the dots and possess a unique viewpoint to solve problems.
  • Collaborative, communicative, and a strong teammate.
  • Exceptional communication skills, and with the ability to articulate technical concepts into easy-to-understand language for non technical business partners.

Bonus:

  • Experience in the healthcare / life sciences industry.
  • Experience in a fast paced startup environment.
  • Passion for healthcare and improving patient outcomes.
  • Prior experience with Databricks, Snowflake.
  • Prior experience with docker and Kubernetes.
