Position Overview
The HR Experiences team provides critical capabilities to our customers to manage core aspects of the Employee lifecycle including Benefits, Health Savings Accounts, Expenses, and Compensation.
At Paylocity, a Principal Software Engineer I serves a vital role in shaping our products' future through technical direction and being hands-on with our code. As one of the most senior engineers, you will be involved in helping our Teams solve complex engineering problems. Working in an Agile environment amongst our Software Development teams you'll play a key role in influencing and setting technical direction, design, code review, and as appropriate performing hands-on coding & testing.
As a Principal Software Engineer I within HR Experiences you will be expected to:

• Be responsible for helping guide technical architecture for the Products within our Domain
• Help decompose systems into scalable services fueling our continued growth
• Partner with various groups within our organization on ways to build modern cloud-oriented solutions considering scale, stability, and cost efficiency
• Serve as a mentor and coach to others to help guide them in their career progression
• Possess expert knowledge in SOLID principles, enterprise system architecture, cloud infrastructure, and engineering best practices

Who you are
Engineering is the function that applies principles and techniques of engineering, mathematics, and computer/data science to the design, development, and testing of applications.

• Enthusiastic about working directly with all levels of engineers, software test engineers, product managers, and engineering managers
• You fully comprehend Domain Driven Design and you have a rich history of practicing it
• Excellent at describing complex problems in a way that is easy to digest, through the creation and presentation of concise technical documentation and architectural diagrams
• Passionate about optimization and modern design patterns, while being able to form iterative plans to update legacy architecture to current standards
• Deep knowledge about the entire software stack - Data / APIs and Events / User Experience and you are always thinking about scalability
• Outstanding technical analysis skills, you can receive high level goals and translate those into concrete implementation plans while managing risk and maintaining high standards
• An advocate for continuous improvement of our software development process
• Stays current on the latest new technologies and the applicability of how to apply them
• Able to work in a collaborative environment with a willingness to share your ideas
• Able to work independently on modules, complete tasks with high quality, and contribute to high velocity, but unafraid to seek out suggestions from other team members
• You have no fear of crossing team boundaries and have demonstrable experience at breaking down silos

• Take on a leading role in discovery, design and implementation for major systems that involve?cross-team?dependencies
• Routinely and consistently push the team forward through design, complex problems, and ultimately delivering value to our clients
• Evangelize and gain team alignment with organization-wide technical strategies and best practices
• Work effectively in systems that have significant consequences of failure or a high degree of ambiguity
• Make technology choices for components needed as part of an existing larger architecture or framework.
• Solicit and provide feedback via decision-making frameworks from across the organization asking probing, insightful questions and raising awareness of any unintended impact or dependencies within their area of expertise.
• Pushing for all code to reflect a standard of quality well exceeding that of the current system
• Own the overall health and engineering quality of a Domain
• Be a technical subject matter expert for a Domain
• Initiate and lead?cross-team?collaboration

Required Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
• 7+ years of Software Engineering experience, with a proven track record in leading large-scale delivery
• Expert level proficiency with .NET or similar object oriented language at scale
• Expert level proficiency with MS SQL Server at scale, including performance tuning and complex query debugging
• Deep experience with Domain Driven Design, cloud-based solutions, leading large-scale delivery, and modernization of software systems
• Deep knowledge with building Event driven solutions
• Deep knowledge with RESTful API design and development
• Must be comfortable with both creating high level architecture and reading / writing application code
• Must be adaptable to change and have a willingness to learn
• Must have a strong sense of curiosity
• Must commit to their role and take responsibility for their tasks
• Must be able to work effectively in an agile and team environment
• Must be effective and creative in problem-solving

Preferred Experience:

• Proven expertise with React
• Proven expertise with AWS (preferred), Azure, or GCP
• Proven expertise with MongoDB, DynamoDB, or a NoSQL database alternative
• Proven expertise with Kafka, RabbitMQ or an alternative event streaming platform

This role can be performed from any office in the US. The pay range for this position is $118,945 - $218,382/yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here. This information is provided per the relevant state and local pay transparency laws for the location in which this position will be performed. Base pay information is based on market location.
